[UNSOLVED; NEEDED TO REINSTALL] Cannot log in anymore: KDE deamon crash.

Did some updates yesterday. Upgraded to the new kernel.  When the desktop appeared I got 2 crash screens: 1 for kcminit-startup and on for KDE Deamon; both with a segmentation error 11. System was still running normal after clicking ok on those crash pop up boxes.

Today I did another update. I run a rsync script using the ftp.nluug.nl mirror to a update a repository on an external disk and I noticed that next to a java update the file kde4-config 4.6.1.2. was deleted.  I subsequently ran synaptic to update from the disk. That is is my normal procedure and always goes well. Not this time.

The next reboot got me as far as the disk, the tools and the globe icons and I was thrown back to the login screen. A next attempt got me as far as the disk icon and then right back to the login screen.  Re-installing task-kde4-minimal was not possible because of a missing kde4-config file.  I managed to start synaptic from a terminal and changed the repository to the pass server and did another update. No result.

So now I'm stuck on my desktop. Writing from my laptop which I did not upgrade.

Any help would be appreciated. Perhaps getting kde-config-4.6.1.2. back might help?

Could not resolve the issue and had to do a new install. See my next post on what looks like issues with kernel 3.2.

Mellon,
Reload the PASS server. Install kde4-config.     
*Be aware - this will reset your desktop to a default kde set up. Back up your .kde4 to preserve your settings. I'd do this by renaming it to .kde4-bak.

Normally you only need kde4-config if you want to restore the default KDE settings. Were you fully updated before you installed your new kernel?

Did the update and rebooted and got as far as the Globe icon. rebooted again. Choose failsafe and started Konsole from the terminal window (cause I could not get a copy to clipboard from terminal) and typed 'startkde'. Got as far as the globe again and here is the output

On the question by Bald Brick. Was I up to date when I moved to the new kernel? Yes, as far as the mirror nluug allowed me to be up-to-date. I have not yet figured out how to use the rsync script with the pass server. But except for the mentioned crash report windows I got my usual system until I ran the update that updated java and deleted the kde4-config file.

You cannot rsync the PASS server. It is protected.
