Finally got Skype 4.0 to work as it should.
Download it (dynamic or static doesn't make any difference)
and unpack in a directory of choice. (Thanks for the links la_monda).
Then:
"If you are using the dynamic and statically linked generic versions, you
will need to choose a path for Skype to exist in.  We recommend copying the
skype binary to /usr/bin and installing (=copying) sounds/, lang/ and avatars/ into
the /usr/share/skype directory." (Copied from the 'readme').
So I did, as su of course.
Now indeed it works like a charm, faster and better quality, both sound and picturewise.
Seems it is indeed ready for Synaptic.

             Cheers, Hoos.

Hoos, 1st I made a backup of the folders and the files i was going to replace to the specific directories.
then tried with the the static version with no luck.
restored the backup files, all ok.
then tried with the dynamic version and now everything works ok.
If version 4.0 eventually passes to the repositories, will an update break our "upgrade"?

Nope, at least in my case it did not,
I've switched back & forth between 2.2 & 4.0 without any troubles.

that might be so.. but you both have rendered your systems non supportive by the community in case of breakage due to outside package installs ... and we do try to get packages updated as fast as we can..

Scoundrel,

I only experement a little when I'm sure it won't break my system
and be able to restore it into the original state, which is the case here.
Anyway, that's why I'm posting to the 'advanced user's section' in the 1st place....  ::)

           Cheers!, Hoos.

returned to previous version from backup file.
had 2-3 skype related freezes that were recovered only with REISUB.
another option that they removed in the 4.0 version is the ability to stop receiving video from your contact.
I will keep my backups in case an update doesnt fit well with my system.
