Skype 4.0
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:24:31 AM »
Just out of curiosity I wanted to try Skype 4.0.
Download from www. skype.com
There is no source package just precompiled packages for *buntu, fedora, debian and suse.
The fedora and suse .rpm's failed to install due to dependency issues.
So I downloaded the debian variant and converted it to .rpm through alien:
alien -r <name_of_file> (alien is in the repo's).
The resulting .rpm installed without a hitch, e.g. no dependency issues.
Works like a charm and seems right now after a couple of hours testing to be faster
with no advertising so far.

Just to let y'all know, cheers, Hoos.

NB: regular installation KDE, fully updated.

I would like to see it added to the repo for those who wish to try it .......  maybe have both the existing one and this available.

A couple of people I know who have tried it say they prefer it. They would both have an account with Skype, so I have no ide about the ads.

Yep,

The request is already there but the discussion has been blown off by the mod (and quite rightly so).
However the devs want the source but it's simply not there, so this is a nice workaround.
The .deb file can be split into .tar.gz pieces using ark for example and thus be used by the devs.
But that doesn't appear to be necessary because the conversion works out of the box;
ready for the 'testing' section in Synaptic, or so it seems.
         Cheers, Hoos.

hoos, I they added both the dynamic and the static 4.0 version here:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/downloading.dynamic

 and here:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/downloading.static

I believe these are the source packages right?

p.s I don't know packaging, that's why I'm asking
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200, Gigabyte GA-EP43DS3, 4GB Kingston DDR2 PC8500 1066MHZ, Nvidia 8500GT 512 RAM. Corsair 450VX
Thinkpad R61
PCLinuxOS 2012.x KDE, 3.2.18-pclos1.pae.bfs Kernel

LaMonda,

That's the same as I was referring to, but thanks.
However, forget all about it; after further testing the X-server locks up and a hard reboot
is needed.
So let's stick to version 2.2.
Sorry folks!

       Cheers, Hoos.
