copy complete system to bootable USB?
« on: July 04, 2012, 11:44:33 AM »
Is it possible to copy a complete system to a bootable USB?  My system has / on a 12 GB partition, and /Home on a 160GB partition, however, each partition only has a little under
8GB actually used.  So is it possible to put this on a 16GB USB and effectively make the system, with all its files, available for reinstallation of all files, drivers, etc. in case something
should happen to the hard drive?  Or in case some upgrade should go badly wrong?  Have looked at forum search and google, but not seen this addressed.  (I don't know just what
"Live USB Creator" does, but I think it just makes about the same thing as I could download from PCLOS. Or am I mistaken?)

Thanx--doug

Create a remaster of your present system, and then use LiveUSB Creator to put it on a USB stick as a live bootable OS.

From there you should be able to boot it on most hardware, and install it, giving the same OS as you now have.

You will likely need to use the mylivecd option --workdir  as mylivecd will fail to create an ISO if the combined data (OS & /home) is too big.

Even if this happens LiveUSB Creator can create a liveUSB from the files remaining in the 'workdir'.
Once done you can delete the workdir to save on space.

I would also advise using the 'gzip' option for compression .....  it will be much quicker than the default and as it is going on a USB stick the size is not critical.

HTH.
