Not sure what i could be doing wrong. I hit f3 (f6 did nothing) at the grub menu, added the parameters you suggested including the 1.

So i followed your instructions and i get a command promt. I su, and I see [root@localhost  ]#  i try "rpm -e dkms-broadcom-wl" and i get "error: unable to open  /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc for reading: input/output error."

Your installation is corrupted, and that's the reason why it hangs at boot. Although the broadcom-wl driver update was affected from some issue, that was limited to the network connectivity only, as it appear from the other 3 reports about broadcom-wl.

I would suggest a reinstall.

I know, but in my view is the fastest path to successfully recover your system, dealing with a damaged installation is very difficult even for experts!

The installation itself is very fast, you only need to backup and reinstall your own data, using a LiveCD, if not already done.

This problem has just come back on 6/14/12 with the latest round of updates. Exactly the same as before so I suspect it's not a corruption second time around.  I had my doubts the first time.  I'm going to try the fix again and report back.
