ram chips, not sure if theyre bolth picking up
« on: June 13, 2012, 05:20:20 PM »
i installed a couple new ram chips in my laptop, from 512Mb to 1G. Thing is , i whent to hardware/ memory, and found two "caches"s (L1, and L2). now, on my moms laptop, running the same linux, bolth ram chips were listed in the same spot, each one giving (it said ) 1024Kb of ram. Now, on this laptop, L1  has 16kb , and L2 has the usual 1G (1024kb) . ive removed one, switched them , and a myriad of other things, and have decided that either A, one ram chip refuses to get noticed, or the more likely B, my computer will not register bolth, but either one.  Any help? (i'll find out if A is correct in a bit)

one of the easiest ways to see what is going on is to use the command

top

That shows both memory 'seen' and the Swap situation at the top of the screen.

not sure what you are asking here, if how much ram is reported or how it is reported

i know that sometimes pcc can report improperly the amount of ram, my desktop still says that i have 8gbs of ram and i only have 1

L1 and L2 are memory modules on the cpu, not sure what information you want to know or verify here

you worte that L2 is 1024 kb or 1 gb, 1 gb is 1024 mbs, 1 mb is 1024kb and that is ok for a L2 cache module on the cpu

each cpu has diferent sizes of cache memory modules

in my pc it reports two cache modules and two memory modules, one labeled A0 and the other A1 but as i said one reports 512 mbs of ram and the other 8 gbs, i have 1 256 ram module and 1 gb module

on konsole write free, post results

also, let us know what sizes of ram modules you are using and what laptop you have, some models only accept certain brands of ram modules and certain sizes, if it is a old laptop it could be limited to use two 512 ram modules os if you put two 1 gb modules it could only see 1 or see 2 but identify them wrong, more information, be specific

well i just want to know if the computer is using bolth ram chips. I did a bit of testing, and heres my results.

chip A
works in slot a (inner slot) , L1 shows 16 kb L2 shows 1024
works in slot b(outer slot) , L1 shows 16 kb L2 shows 1024

chip B
works in slot a (inner slot) , L1 shows 16 kb L2 shows 1024
works in slot b(outer slot) , L1 shows 16 kb L2 shows 1024

i tried them individually, together, i get the same results. im not sure how to read all of that information to see whats working and whats not on "top" , but i can send it to you if you want.

Mem:   1924804k total,

You have 2GiB memory installed.

Regarding your report about the Cache (only) being shown in the hardware section of PCC ......   yes that happens with some motherboards; I have had it here on a previous PC.

You might also be interested in installing   hardinfo   from the repository ....  it gives comprehensive information about the PC.

yes, tour inner and outer slot is L1 and L2 cache modules that are part of the cpu, you can't do anything with those modules and look that it reports kbs, not mbs

top shows this

Mem:   1924804k total,   486920k used,  1437884k free

the first is the ram in kbs, divide by 1024 to get mbs and that result for 1024 to get gbs

that is 1.83 gbs of ram for system, the rest is being used by the video card, in a laptop this is done automatically on most recent models

from that report that looks like you installed properly two 1 gb ram modules

you are not stressing, you made a valid question, nothing bad on that   :)

the command top is a bit too much, the command free is more simple to understand

for example:

Mem:       1017916     788816     229100          0      22020     260352
-/+ buffers/cache:     506444     511472
Swap:      3068376       2064    3066312

offers just ram and swap, nothing else

hardinfo thing?

Seems like it might be time to mark the subject line of the original post as [SOLVED]?
