solved missing toolbar from "Configure Your Desktop"
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:14:46 AM »

Hi, I have been experimenting with installing pclinuxos 2011.9 onto Parallels 7
which is running on an imac. Everything seems to be in order except for one
thing. The problem is there is no Toolbar on top of the "Configure your
Desktop" page. Without this I cannot move backwards and forwards for each item
and subsequently after each adjustment the whole app has to be turned off and
then on again.

I have pclos on my main machine and the Toolbar is on that one. If anybody can
shed some light on this I will be very grateful.

Could you post a screen shot of the window?

Dear Old-Polack

Sorry I wasn't quicker but I had to find a keyboard with a prtscn button that
worked.

Please find enclosed two screenshots. The first is of the pclos installation in
Parallels 7 on my imac and the second is of my main machine which is a standard
pc installation.

Try clicking on this file and see if it opens with or without the top bar

/usr/share/applications/kde4/systemsettings.desktop

If you right click on the tray icon - Icon Settings - Application ...  the command used should be

systemsettings -caption "%c" %i

Mumbojumbo, out of curiosity - what does the default windows inside Dolphin look like?

Hi Just18

I tried both your suggestions and clicked on systemsettings.desktop. It opened
and the Toolbar was still missing. I checked systemsettings -caption "%c" %i
and it was as you described.

Hi GermanTux

Here's a screenshot of default windows in Dolphin.

Hi GermanTux

Here's a screenshot of default windows in Dolphin.

From the PC menu, PC --> Graphics --> KSnapshot brings up the app to take your screenshots. You can select from a drop down menu... Full Screen, Window Under Cursor, Rectangular Region, Freehand Region, or Section of Window. After selecting which you want, click the Take a New Snapshot button, then Save As...

It would be helpful if you selected Window Under Cursor and posted only the Window screenshot, rather than the entire screen, and do so full sized, so we can actually read the text. The window can be reduced in size before the screenshot is taken, if only one area is important to the subject at hand, like the toolbar, in this case.

Could it be that SystemSettings' toolbar was somewhat detached? Maybe the toolbar is just somewhere in the desktop. Close all applications except SystemSettings and make sure its in focus. If you don't have SystemSettings in focus the detached toolbar will not be visible. If you find it on your desktop, move your cursor to the left of the toolbar until the mouse cursor turns into a cross. Drag the toolbar to the top of the main window until it appears to get docked.

Right-click on the toolbar and select Lock Toolbar Positions to prevent it from littering around.

If it isn't on the desktop, someone else might come along and give another suggestion.

A toolbar-less SystemSettings:

Hi Everybody,

Many thanks for all the help, I think unfortunately there is no simple answer so I am going to start the installation again. I think the problem is linked to when I installed Parallels 7 tools.

Many thanks again.
