Desktop background disappeared [Solved]
« on: June 10, 2012, 05:11:57 AM »
Hello all
For my XFCE desktop background I use PCLinuxOS Phoenix 2011.png, ie. the blue background with the white phoenix.
Suddenly in the course of today, this png has disappeared and been replaced with a grey background.
Menu - XFCE4 settings manager - Desktop shows that the correct background has been chosen, but it does not display.
Shutdown and reboot makes no difference,  the correct picture shows for about a second and then disappears and I am left with a
grey background.
The desktop icons also seem different.
The only packages I have installed today are
FoxitReader
nautilus
libexempi3
doublecmd

Can anyone help ? Advise me where to start looking ?

Problem solved, it was Nautilus. I haven't a clue why, perhaps someone can shed
some light on this ?
I uninstalled Foxit Reader, nautilus, libexempi3 and doublecmd.
The desktop was then correct. I then reinstalled Foxit and doublecmd.
Desktop is still correct.

One thing I did notice was that when I install or uninstall I get the following from Synaptic:

While preparing for installation:

Error in file "/usr/share/applications/xcam.desktop": "foo/bar" is an invalid MIME type ("foo" is an unregistered media type)
Error in file "/usr/share/applications/xcam.desktop": "foo2/bar2" is an invalid MIME type ("foo2" is an unregistered media type)
Error in file "/usr/share/applications/xscanimage.desktop": "foo/bar" is an invalid MIME type ("foo" is an unregistered media type)
Error in file "/usr/share/applications/xscanimage.desktop": "foo2/bar2" is an invalid MIME type ("foo2" is an unregistered media type)

Should I be concerned ?

It's odd that Nautilus would cause this, but not unheard of.  I am guessing Nautlitus inserted itself into more than just a file manager (or tried to) role when you installed the packages, as it does do more inside the Gnome environment.

You are probably better off without it anyway.  Thunar works pretty well.

Thanks for the replies.
I noticed that even though I told Synaptic to completely uninstall nautilus, when I log on
I get a message that nautilus is starting
T6 - NVidia GeForce 7950 GT. Tried selecting a different wallpaper, made no difference,
still only got grey screen.
