Synaptic launch failure
« on: June 08, 2012, 06:37:18 AM »
Hi All,  Recently, when I launch synaptic from my taskbar I get nothing.  Launched from the command line as root I get...

"Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_hide: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed"

Synaptic opens and seems to work properly.  Any ideas about fixing my launcher?

TIA,

Dave

Additionally, you could try pressing the Ctrl+Esc keys to bring up the System Activity window and do a quick search for anything related to Synaptic and then "kill" it

To kill it, right click on the Synaptic entry - choose Send Signal > kill (KILL)

Nice tip - Didn't know about the Ctrl+Esc key combo.

This happens to me every few days. I find killall -s 9 kdesud && kdesud brings the password dialogue up and then all works for a few more days.

It's known since PCLinuxOS 2007 (maybe earlier)  ;D
Have nothing to do with working of Synaptic.
Synaptic was  originally  for deb packages only.
Apt4rpm missing some features (options) compared Synaptic (apt-get) for deb packages.
Guess that is the reason of this message.

I have this same failure, and more   ;D , I installed some package from repozytory and from source code and other rpm.
"re-install" not working , because this not uninstall all dependences - package or libraries.
