No Fn keys working on Toshiba Laptop Satellite L655-121
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:25:06 AM »
Hello there

Since I start usin pclinuxos I had problems with the Fn keys. Specifically, while using them for increase / decrease volume always went ok, I never manged to adjust brightness , with the Fn keys  :'(

As far as read on the internet this is still a common problem that linux has with laptops (not to mention especially with suspension and hybernation..) anyway I know that it seems to be a metter of kernel. (dedicated module(s) are required to get that working)

How may I resolve? I'd like to avoid thinkerin with kernel, since I'm a very newbie user... :o

Anyaway I found a couple of things tha may be useful:

toshiba linux utilities - http://www.buzzard.me.uk/toshiba/index.html

and

FnFX - Toshiba ACPI Daemon for Linux - http://sourceforge.net/projects/fnfx/

(the latter is still a beta, though not updated since 2004  :o :o :o moreover the lionks there seems to be broken)

anyway both should enable the fn keys workin, for the bightness setting

I don't know, I have to ask for the in the package request settings? Or maybe, a more canonical solution, the next pclinuxos kernel version will come with a module preloaded in  the new kernel shipped with the upcoming relase?

My personal opinion: it would be great if 'd exist an universal module capable of enabling the operation of such keys, for all laptops, a passepartout kinda.

Only solution I discovered so far was using the program xbacklight, but I'd like to have those keys working, like another distro.. >:( >:(

Please, answer and infos needed.

From love with italy  :-*

installed acme, but there's still no way to configure any key shortcut for brightenss regulation, moreover such preset  is not present in those of the program. There's only one that concerns voulme, but my Fn keys o adjust it already are working out of the box.

Open a terminal and type

Code: [Select]
acme
Now it should goes to the taskbar.

If you click on it, you can set, what it should do.

Or you can use xbindkeys, to configure your fn keys, there a some articles in our magazine about xbindkeys.

What for a DE you are using?

I just got:

Code: [Select]
[nico@localhost ~]$ xbindkeys -k
Press combination of keys or/and click under the window.
You can use one of the two lines after "NoCommand"
in $HOME/.xbindkeysrc to bind a key.
"(Scheme function)"
    m:0x10 + c:232
    Mod2 + XF86MonBrightnessDown

I pressed Fn+F6 to decrease brithness, and re-execute the program:

Code: [Select]
[nico@localhost ~]$ xbindkeys -k
Press combination of keys or/and click under the window.
You can use one of the two lines after "NoCommand"
in $HOME/.xbindkeysrc to bind a key.
"(Scheme function)"
    m:0x10 + c:233
    Mod2 + XF86MonBrightnessUp
[nico@localhost ~]$

after havin pressed Fn+F7 to increase bightness.

But then usin the above mentioned combos still nothing happens  >:( :'( :'(

sorry, then i've no idea yet  :-[

many many many thanks again <3

The problem is that also other fn keys currently are not workin, apart those for  adjust volume that are ok, others are:

- activate/deactivate wi fi (on some wifi taht i s achieved by usin an hardware switch, but on my laptop taht is done via software...)
- adjust brightness
- activate /deactivate suspension/hybernation
- switch screen (that occours for instance if flaptop is connected via vga cable to a tv) (once when I used win 7 that worked, AAARRGGGHH:::!!)

sorry, I'm newbiw I repeat, hope I explained myself well  :-\

I really do hope thsat those functions will be impolemented in the next upcoming version of pclinuxos, maybe there's nedd to include in it some dedicated patches and modules, like does another distro , right?

sadly and crying yours

PS: I still not tryed out other fn keys, maybe will do that later  ;)

with kernel 3.2.18-pclos1.pae (32 bit on 64 bit pc, i'm on 02.2012 minime
kde vers.)

Code: [Select]
[nico@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.2.18-pclos1.pae #1 SMP Tue May 22 02:20:49
CEST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[nico@localhost ~]$

fn keys workin out of the box are only those for volume and brightness (for
the latter I got no display indicator at all...)

fn keys not working at all are the ones for:

- lock screen
- suspension
- hybernation
- switch display (if one is attached to vga port)
- activate/deactivate wi fi
- activate/deactivate touchpad (well...turning it off works but the system
halts in "video mode" I got to invoke a text console (ctrl+alt+f1) and then
halt and/or reboot)
- zoom/unzoom screen
- search function

only fn + prtsc (end) works (with programs sucj kde4screenshots and
similia...

mh...I supose the last 2 ones works only with windows?

OK, thats all :)

Ps. i'm very sorry I posted this on pclinucos testers group  :'(
