How to remove unwanted printer in pcl control center?
« on: May 30, 2012, 03:57:47 PM »
Several new printing problems have recently cropped up, and I can't figure out why.

Printing used to work fine, but now (without having made any changes in my systems), trying to print from my most current up-to-date PCLinux system, often does not work.  Sometimes I can print from some apps, but not from others.  Sometimes I have to go through a long, frustrating ordeal to get anything to print.

Meanwhile, from my older PCLinux system, printing always works fine; so I know the problem is not with my printer.

One of several problems that I have been able to identify is that I frequently have to go into PCLinux Control Center to reset the correct printer and restart cups.  But even then sometimes it still doesn't work.

The problem seems to be worst trying to print from Libre office and when trying to print pdf files.

One of the most readily identifiable problems is that the PCL control center shows three printers in my system, whereas I really only have one printer connected to the system.

See a screen shot here: http://upquick.com/temp/why.lexmark.jpg

How can I get these two non-existent printers removed?

At one point, I was able to get them removed (forgot how I did that), but when I restarted the system, the non-existent printers showed up again.

Please help!

PCC>Hardware>Setup Printer - then right click on the printer that you want to remove and click delete

Thanks for the suggestion, but it does not work.
the "delete" option is grayed out and cannot be used.

joseppi,

Are the HP and Lexmark printers shown in the screenshot in your house? Or is this at work? I think what you're seeing are other printers on the same network segment. Open CUPS browser in the Admin page by putting http://localhost:631/admin as the address in your web browser. Look at the right hand side of the page under Server Settings section. Is Show printers shared by other systems checked?

Thanks for your info and suggestions.

Neither of the second and third listed printers are connected in our house or home office.

The HPP1200 was in the past, but is not now. The Lexmark never has been.

I followed your suggestion to look at the Admin page, and yes, "Show printers shared by other systems" was checked.  So, I unchecked it and saved the change.

It seems to be working now.  I'll keep checking on the status of my other problems

UPDATE - June 6, 2012 print problems resume today.  I sent a Libre office document to the printer (to print 4 copies) and it printed 3 copies and quit.  Plenty of paper and ink. Printer works fine from other computers on the network.   The "Document Print Status" shows the requested document as "processing."  Went into the control center and clicked on cups "start" to stop and restart cups. No joy.  So, I cancelled that print job and tried to send the same document to the printer to print just one copy.  No joy.  So, I looked in the PCL control center and saw that there are now (again) three printers showing with none shown as the default printer.

As I've previously reported, there is only one printer connected on the network.  The other two are non-existent, but I still cannot find a way to kill them off so they no longer appear.

I reset the one valid printer to be the default and tried to print again.  No joy.

Here's a new screen capture showing the status: http://www.upquick.com/temp/printfail.jpg

How can I get these non-existent printers completely removed?

Surely would appreciate it if someone could provide some suggestions on how to resolve this issue as it continues to be an unresolved matter.

I suspect that these two non-existent printers still appearing in my list of network printers is at the root of various other printing problems that I am having.

But there are other printing problems as well.

Again today (as previously reported), I sent a document to print 3 copies from Libre office. Only 2 copies printed and the printer stopped, leaving the same print job listed as "processing."

So, I went to the PCL control center to investigate and, sure enough, the one valid printer no longer shows up as the default printer and the other two (non-existent) printers are still showing up.  So, I reset the one valid printer as the default printer and went back again to "System" > "Manage System Services" to click "cups" to stop and restart it, but the third copy remains hung and "Document Print Status" still reports it "processing" now 18 minutes after the first two copies printed.

What in the world could be the problem here?

Help ... please.

not in control center as requested

Have you tried going straight into CUPS as admin

in (say) firefox

https://192.168.1.3:631/admin/ maybe this is better http://localhost:631/admin/

Then manage printers, see what shows up, select a printer, use the drop down administration menu and delete printer.

somewhere along the the line you need to enter root and root pwd.
