I don't know whether its classed as a hang or crash but Opera stalls about 10 seconds after being launched and either recovers after about 30 seconds or I have to force it to close.

Opera-qt and the like I mentioned are what are what I have listed under the Dependencies tab as conflicts in Synaptic for Opera.

There are three conflicts,

Opera-qt4
Opera-unite
Opera-unite-qt4

and one obsolete which is Opera 11.64 itself, IE Opera  (<11.64)

Your meaning isn't clear. Open a terminal and post the output from the following.

su
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get update
apt-get check
apt-get dist-upgrade
exit

If Opera-qt4, Opera-unite and Opera-unite-qt4 are packages you are seeing listed in Synaptic, you did not install them from a PCLinuxOS repository.

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

I've run the commands in the order as above and no issues are reported.

Opera-qt4, Opera-unite, Opera-unite-qt4 are only listed as conflicts under Dependencies in the properties for Opera when in Synaptic.

They aren't listed as packages under Search so my question is how do get rid of them whatever they are?

I've installed NO packages that aren't in the default PCL2012 repository.

i would just uninstall opera, complete removal, then delete any opera config on home folder and then reinstall to see if that helps

als, what repo are you using on synaptic?

i don't use apt, i only use synaptic, it is what is supposed to be used in pclinux to install, mantain and remove apps

I completely removed Opera via Synaptic then downloaded and installed the .deb package for Opera 12 from Opera's own website.

When inspecting Opera through Synaptic, there aren't any conflicts.

The only issue still, is when Opera, after running for a short while, its still freezes for about 20 seconds before continuing - its a puzzle !

pclinux uses rpm, not deb

we don't recommend to install packages outside the repo

it is better to remove it but i ignore if the installation modified files or configs

maybe create a new users and see if the new user works better with opera

if not, reinstall and compare results, don't forget to make backups first

I'm happy to stick with the repositories for PCL but its the default Opera install that Synaptic reports as having conflicts.

No conflicts with the .deb package install from Opera web-site - although as I said above, the hang is still present.

This Opera issue is the only bug I have with PCL and PCL is one of only two KDE4 dsitros I would recommend, the other being Mepis 11.
The downfall for M11 for me was I couldn't get rid of a row of black dashes across the top of the screen which I was advised was a Plymouth issue.

I'm interested in knowing how you installed a .deb package on a system that uses .rpm packages.

alien, it is on repos, it allows you to do just that, but as you know, you are on your own when you do it

My apologies for stating .deb above when in fact it was the .rpm package I installed.

How ever as Opera 12 has been added to the repositories, I uninstalled that from the Opera web-site and installed the repo version and so far Opera is running smoothly.

Might I ask how the repo version would differ from the Opera web-site version?

There was some code somewhere that wasn't liked by the system?

I've just done a clean reinstall of PCL/KDE4, formatting / partition in the process.

Leaving /home unformated, I saved a copy of bookmarks.adr and deleted .opera from my user directory.

I left the repositories default, installed Opera, did a full update then copied old bookmarks.adr to the new .opera.

Opera is still hanging when I run it - bizarre!

you saved home, some opera configuration is being saved and giving you the problem

As I said before I deleted .opera altogether prior to installing Opera, only keeping a copy of bookmarks.adr.

What other Opera config files exist on the /home directory?

i didn't read the .opera part only the adr, sorry

since i never save home, just my files not sure if anything else is saved there, not sure if the addons of opera are stored in the .opera folder or in another place

if you can replacate this weird behavior in another user i would say that the problem is not the user or the /home folder
