Firefox / Opera / Flash (Fixed)
« on: June 05, 2012, 03:30:59 AM »
Just got PCL 2012.0.2 installed and I'm trying to sort out flash for Firefox and Opera.

The default Flash package didn't work so referred to the forum and found a posting that recommended changing to Flash from the test repo for gaming.

Did so and Flash now works for Firefox. However any Flash related content in Opera is causing Opera to hang.

what version of flash did you installed?

afik, the different one mentioned is on normal repos, not in a specific section or in testing

in the description of the optional flash 11.1 synaptic says this

"WARNING: This is an OUTDATED version with potential SECURITY ISSUES.
ONLY use this version if the current version does not work on your
system, i.e., some Nvidia graphic cards."

Yes its the 11.1 version I installed with the warning about Nvidia cards, after removing 11.2, the default installed version.

My graphics is a Geforce 6200 AGP

this is a temporary fix, supposedly should work for opera too but as you see it is not working that well

the only thing i can think of is disable hardware acceleration on the flash plugin to see if that helps opera

Just got PCL 2012.0.2 installed ...

Have you installed the apt-sources-list package in Synaptic? If you haven't done it yet, do that first thing. The original repositories list on that iso is out of date.

Having removed one or two Nvidia drivers packages that I shouldn't have, I sought advice on the right ones to install for my card and reinstalled Flash 11.1 from the XFCE4 repo and everything seems fine for Firefox now.

Opera still hangs so need to sort that out.

Thanks for the replies above folks.

I doubt its a Flash issues as Firefox is running nicely with Flash 11.1.

Anything identified by KDE4 users that causes Opera 11.64 to hang for 30 seconds when launched and then continue?

i have used opera for almost a year, can't replicate the 30 seconds that you mention

flash does work different on opera and in firefox

i had videos that kept downloading from flash sites after closing opera, the same videos worked well in firefox, the plugin behaves differently on both apps

T6,

out of curiosity, is your graphics card an Nvidia?

The warning in Synaptic about older Nvidia cards conflict with Flash has me wondering regarding a stalling Opera.

no, my desktop is a old ati and my netbook is a intel

the new version of opera, sometimes they release a new version of opera just to work with new flash, maybe this is the case, wait for a new flash or a new opera  :-\

Opera still hangs for about 30 seconds or so after being launched.

Its the only bug I've got with PCL2012.

As far as I know Java is required for Opera so is anyone using Java 7 rather than Java 6 as I am?

opera uses java?

are you sure it is a pclinux bug or a error in the config of opera?

why don't you try to delete the opera configs?

Bug with PCLinuxOS? You installed java from outside the repositories.

As of Opera 10.50, Opera uses the Java plug-in. Previously Opera used the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) directly.

The installation instructions for Java on java.com are are correct, but the configuration step is wrong. Use the following instructions instead.

According to the instructions on Opera's website, you should be using java version 6.

I've checked Opera properties in Synaptic.

Java is 1.6.0

There are three conflicts,

Opera-qt4
Opera-unite
Opera-unite-qt4

and one obsolete which is Opera 11.64 itself, IE Opera  (<11.64)

If I rectify this, it may stop Opera crashing?

you didn't mentioned that opera was crashing, you said that flash is the problem and that you installed old flash plugin or am i wrong?

i only have installed opera 11.64 and i can't find those packages you mention

opera unite is a function in opera but i never used it and i can't find it on repos, or the qt4 opera
