LiveUSB persisent doesn't retain graphic setting
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:20:03 PM »
Well the title says it.
Persistence works fine-----except for the video card setting. I have to set the resolution at every start.
This may be a clue.--------When I login as any user, the Nvidia logo is redisplayed and return to the kdm login. Then the login will open the desktop, but default graphic resolution.
Thanks for any ideas.

What happens if after reaching the desktop for the first time after boot, you immediately issue a Ctrl,Alt+Backspace, and log in again?

Which version of PCLOS are you using as LiveUSB?

Well I did use ctr-alt-bksp, but that sent me to tty1 & a reboot. So then I used the normal logout which returned to kdm login where login reflected my 1600x900 res.
All's good.
But a restart or shutdown gets a default res.
I looked at xorg.conf while at my 1600/900 desktop and looked ok to my untrained eye.
I guess that is obvious. The wrong res xorg.conf would be the one to check.
Thx for your attention.

It would appear that the saved config for the display is not being used on initial boot up, but when you log out and back in again it is, as one would expect.
When using persistence, one would expect the saved config to be used .....

Is this something new or has this been the case previously?

OK, did a test here .........  LiveUSB of KDE 32 bit  (EDIT:  Have also tested on 64 bit Test4 ISO with same results)

Booted in Persistent mode.
Got a screen of 1024xxxx  whatever .........  using vesa driver.
2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs

Changed the display settings in PCC - Hardware to use Nvidia driver and correct monitor.

Rebooted in Persistent mode again

I saw the Nvidia Logo flash as I booted, so knew it was using the correct driver.

Logged in and am now on desktop of 1680x1050 as it should be.

What version ISO are you using?

Thanks for your input Just18.
It was created with minime.2012.02
But I re-did this minime install a couple of times. The original install behaved ok, but after updating, the nvidia-current driver was incompatible and gave me a desktop with 6 identical, miniature desktops.
I had the same experience with previous installed systems so I knew I needed to change video drivers.
I changes to nouveau, which worked in my installed system, but with each reboot I got the same 6x desktop. At the time I thought the driver was at fault, so I re-created the live usb twice with the same results. So with a new liveusb I pinned the original minime2012.02 nvidia current.

Now I see that the nouveau driver would have worked, but the problem was that my driver settings were not saved after reboot.

I hope that makes sense.
Thanks

I haven't tested minime in this situation ......  have you tried the fulll KDE to see if there is any difference?

It might be a worthwhile exercise in determining what is wrong .....  minime or some difficulty with hardware recognition.

Thanks for your input. I'll remember that.
I am using this as a test install for kde 4.8 and nearly done--- never used the persistence feature before.
Next time around I'll give it a try.
See ya
