(SOLVED) random failure of loading "X" at boot
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:51:47 AM »
Hallo to the community once again. I dont know if i described my problem correctly through the topic's subject but here it goes.
Sometimes when the system boots it doesnt load the kde desktop. It presents a black text login screen and i have to provide my account name, my password, and then type "startx" in order to load the kde desktop.
The problem is that it does that randomly so i cant think of what bothers the boot sequence.
Does any of you have any clue?
kde edition fully updated, nvidia gforce 8500gt, nvidia driver version: 295.53
Thnx in advance or the support.

in console write uname -r to know what kernel you are using

have you done maintenance to the pc?  cleaning dust?

the driver you mention, is it set correctly?

kernel: 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs
The nvidia driver was automatically installed during my installation several months ago.
Since then, it gets auto-updated through "apt" service.
Maintenance, cleaning dust etc, nope.
The weird thing is that it does that randomly once every 10 boots or so...

it is not the same to have the driver installed and have it loaded and in use

at each boot i have the nvidia logo shown up for some seconds and the following packages are found installed in synaptics:
- dkms-nvidia173
- dkms-nvidia-current
- libdri-drivers-experimental
- x11-driver-video-nouveau
- x11-driver-video-nv
- x11-driver-video-nvidia173
- x11-driver-video-nvidia-current
should i live them as it is, or should i remove something?

no, as i said, it is not the same to have them installed and in use, i have them installed too and i have a intel video card

if you see the nvidia logo then you must be using the nvidia driver, good

about the recommendation made by bicol, run fsck on the partition
