Problems shutting down
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:54:16 AM »
Hi friends,

my PCLOS LXDE 2012 worked fine but lately I have problems with shut down, not always, only sometimes, I get a black screen and I have to force pressing the button off 4 sec.

I am not sure, but normally happens when I close Firefox and  very very quickly shutdown.

I use the kernel-2.6.38.8.pae-bfs, could be this the problem? I was reading this:

At this point I'm unsure about the whole issue, re-read the whole thread:

- kernel-2.6.33.5.bfs is working as expected
- kernel-2.6.38.8.pae-bfs doesn't shutdown correctly

other users look live having some/similar shutdown issue using 2.6.38.8 kernel, but a custom 2.6.36.x works:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,92384.0.html

this bug from fedora look to me very similar to your issue:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=712060

all the above point the finger to some change in 2.6.38.8 kernel, while previous kernels (< 2.6.37.x) look like to not be affected.

Debugging this issue can be very difficult an time consuming, I would suggest to install kernel 2.6.33.7.pae.bfs,
until someone will find the underlying issue and possibly the solution.

(a note about the "loop" dependency you notice at shutdown: some service depends from other services, which in turn may depend
from the first, these messages only note about this "dependency loop" but are otherwise harmful, do not worry about that).

You can install the 2.6.38.8-pclos kernel to see if it makes a difference.

4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM

Hi friends,

for a week my PCLOS LXDE was working well but yesterday I had the same problem shutting down.

Today I had other problem, PCLOS logged out and in automatically, I had to log again in a new session...  Very weird.

You can install the 2.6.38.8-pclos kernel to see if it makes a difference.

I tried the kernel-2.6.38.8.bfs  a few times and I had no problems, but... the boot is always very very slow: 1'30'' With the other I boot in only 40 sec.

Any advice?

Thanks.

The one I suggested is not a bfs kernel. Please note the different 2.6.38.8 kernels available.

You might try kernel-2.6.38.8-pclos3.

I installed the kernel today. At the moment is running fine. I'll try this kernel some days.

Thanks.

Hi friends,

I have the same problem shutting down with the kernel-2.6.38.8-pclos3.

Could be a hardware issue?

Any advice?

Thanks

Make sure you have lshw installed {in synaptic}, then :

.....open ROOT terminal and type :  lshw      ...and post the result here.

...also check your computer BIOS settings - eg: power...or energy saving stuff....aspci  etc.

How old is your machine ?    Battery  ?

My machine started to do the same thing after
the battery wore down.

A possibility.

Must think it's in hibernation for some reason.    Can't
read the time due to the battery being quite dead.   Any
problems at bootup ?

Hi friends,

My laptop is a Lenovo T61, 5-6 years old I think.  The battery is dead, the laptop is always plugged.

At bootup I had some problems closing the session only one or two times.

.Hi Aleph ..............

I am typing on almost the exact model laptop - a T61  but i have the intel video, and you have the NVIDIA chip.

FIRST of all a battery for this unit is less than $25 usd.  and i'd seriously consider getting one.  Make sure its for your series of T61.

Anyway, you should check your settings in the BIOS.....its probably set up for WINDOWS energy stuff.

Press  f1 upon initially booting up, and it'll get you into the bios.

Under config, go to POWER settings and check them out....also make sure your INTEL AMT control is = disabled.

...In LXDE there are some "energy" saving modes under SCREENSAVER settings......ADVANCED TAB > uncheck the POWER MGMT ENABLED box....

- maybe more stuff, but you need a minimal working battery in a laptop, its designed that way.
Some might argue, but its common sense - for the ac adapter acts with the charging system.

hope this helps.

JN.

Hi JNibski,

Thank you for the advice.

I am confuse about which settings I have to change at the bios.

The INTEL AMT control is disabled but the power settings I had many options:

     - Intel (R) SpeedStep technology (Enabled)
              Mode for AC (Auto)
              Mode for battery (Battery Optimized)

     - Adaptive thermal Management
              Scheme for AC (Max. Performance)
              Scheme for Battery (Balanced)

     - CDRoom Speed (Normal)

     - CPU Power Management (Auto)

     - PCI Bus Power Management (Auto)

Which I have to change?

I also unchecked the POWER MGMT at the screensaver settings and now lxdpms is Enabled when bootup, before was disabled and I had to enabled it.

Here in Spain a battery for this Lenovo is about 50-60 €...

What you have done so far should be fine...

...Why? do you watch movies?   That is not an issue, and can be turned on and off.

I'm sorry to hear that - BUT there are 3 types for the T61 -(based on hrs/cells) -all you need is the lowest rated hr unit which can be found all over the net -for less than $25 usd.  Please shop around, online... You only "need" the 4 cell - but make sure of your proper model # matchup.....also your AC adapter might have an AUTOMATIC shutdown/shutoff circuit in it - (when hot or whatever) and MAY not be LXDE at all!!!  Also one last thing.............did you make sure you got a good ISO "burn"?

I think the image was ok, PCLOS 2012 was working well for 2 months more o less, the problem started a months ago...

If the problem persist maybe I should reinstall PCLOS...

Thanks.
