I've just completed re-installation of the files that AVASYS says are needed, making sure I installed the correct ones for PCLOS. I opened up PCC and tried to set up the scanner but again it isn't recognized. It appears that my luck finally ran out with this scanner and nothing I can do will get it recognized. Like I said, maybe it's time to move on to a new scanner but I hate to spend the $. Thanks for all of your time.

Re-starting the system didn't have any effect on the scanner recognition so I admit defeat and will soon buy a compatible scanner that fits my budget and needs.

I'm closing this topic and marking it solved even though I didn't actually solve the problem. In the end I ordered a new Canon CanoScan LiDE 200 which according to the SANE website is completely compatible with Linux. @DJohnston, thank you for taking the time to help me with this even if we weren't successful.

You're welcome, Snapshot. Maybe you can return the favor one day. Here's hoping you get a scanner that is well supported for a long time to come.
