gnome power manager not working on LXDE
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:46:39 PM »
Hi all,
I am using PCLOS LXDE. I have installed gnome-power-manager, and made it run at startup. I set the preferences to turn the monitor off and send the computer to sleep. But it is not working, and nothing happens after the times I have set. Does anybody know how can I debug it?

Thanks in advance.

Mmutoo:  It would be really useful if you could add to your post details of your machinery, whether it has been updated since install, and step-by-step what you did to G-P-M to arrive at the point you describe. Those that might be willing and able to help may be mental, but not psychic.  ;D

Thanks BJF :) Yes, I have installed LXDE, then installed apt-sources-list, then reloaded and updated my system. After that, I have installed the package gnome-power-manager. The hardware is an hp pavillion dv1547ea. Let me know if you needed any more details guys.

Some notebooks will not go to sleep from Power Manager settings. I'm presuming that you have explored Suspend On Lid Close? Hibernation typically requires a large Swap file to write into, and again, not all notebooks will Hibernate. Do you have a Fn-F2 or similar keyboard option to manually induce a coma (Suspend)? You may have to set the screensaver to blank the screen after x minutes and do Suspend from the keyboard manually.

That is all you did? You didn't install anything else?

If as you say, gnome power manager is not working, you must have done more than just install it. What steps did you take to set it up? What tests did you perform to determine that it was working/not working? Give step by step details.

A brand and model number is not a hardware description. - What? You expect us to search the web for what HP says they include for this model? That will not necessarily give an accurate hardware list.
hint: PCC (PCLinuxOS Control Center) has a Hardware section.
hint2: The command lshw will provide a list of your hardware. - lshw must be installed. (That's a lower case L)

Yes, we need more. Your story tells us you have a problem. But without full and accurate details, it is only a story.

@ Neal:

1) I did not install anything else. That was all.

2) For installing, setting up, and testing it:
2.1) I used synaptic to install gnome-power-manager
2.2) I run gnome-power-manager
2.3) From systray (Sorry, windows vocab!) I choose preferences of GPM. My laptop is connected to AC power. In AC power tab I choose "Put computer to sleep when inactive for: 10 min" and "Put display to sleep when inactive for=5 min". Then hit make default and close.
2.4) I do not touch the mouse and keyboard for more than 10 min. No application is running. After 10 min the monitor is still on.

3) I am so so sorry. My mistake. I should have wrote the complete description. But I did not know the name of the devices. Here is what lshw reports: (sorry. the list is huge. I did not know how to attach a text file.)

Did you start gnome-power-manager from the menu only, or did you start it from the terminal? If you started it from the terminal, what feedback was given?
Try changing your screensaver settings to match your gnome-power-manager settings.

I started from terminal running "gnome-power-manager &". There was no error. Then I changed the preferences to 10 min (both screen and sleep). I disabled the screen saver once and changed the settings of the screen saver matching those of the power manager the second time. In both cases it is not working. I can give you a more detailed report for debugging if you tell me how.

Thanks.

mmutoo: I have just done a fresh LXDE install on my EeePC netbook on an 8Gb SD card plugged into the machine's card slot. I updated, and installed gnome-power-manager. I set it to start at boot using the method I have outlined in this Forum, and rebooted. Then I configured the Manager to Suspend on lid closure as Eeep's don't Hibernate, and it works perfectly. On Critical Level it shuts down, as asked to. My Compaq NX9005 Hibernates with the same kind of setting up but won't Suspend when asked. Go figure. Both work as asked to reliably.
Please follow these instructions and report results and we'll see if we can spot the difference.

BJF: Thanks for not giving up! Actually I did not get your point by "Please follow these instructions and report results...". If you mean the instructions for installing LXDE, updating the distro and then installing gnome-power-manager, and making it autostart, I did all! I wrote them step by step in one of my previous posts above. I made changes to the settings but still it is not working at all. Please tell me exactly what information you need and I will provide you with it.

Many thanks.

OK. Open Synaptic from the menus as User(you..) and tick Uninstall for gnome-power-manager. Apply. Close Synaptic.
Find   /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart in your File Manager and as root remove the line:

@gnome-power-manager

Save, and Close out.

Now Shut Down. Restart. Apart from the battery monitor missing from the Panel has anything changed? No odd behaviour?

If No, open Synaptic as User(you..) from Menus and Install gnome-power-manager. Apply.

Find   /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart in your File Manager and as root add the line:

@gnome-power-manager

There should be no blank lines before it, and be sure to add one blank line to the file after it.

Save and Close.

Shut Bown. Reboot.

The Battery Monitor is back on the panel? Good.  Right-click its Preferences and go to

On Battery Power.

Choose When laptop lid is closed, and choose Hibernate. Untick Spin down hard disks.

Close. Unplug the power supply/charger, and shut the laptop lid.

... and if the machine is capable of Hibernation, it will go to sleep and reawaken if the power switch is touched.

Let's know what results you get from the above.

 ;) John.

Thanks BJF. I did exactly as you said. when I close the lid, the system suspends. But still, after waiting for no matter how long, the system does not go to suspend mode, and the monitor does not turn off.

By doing exactly as I said, did you set Hibernate on lid close, or Suspend?

If Hibernate was chosen and it Suspends instead of Hibernating, we are drawn to the conclusion that it is one of those mentioned machines that won't. It might just be the size of the Swap partition not matching RAM size.

If Hibernate was chosen, set Suspend on close, and see if that shuts the screen down then.

Actually I don't have hibernate choice because I did not set a swap partition! And I never tried to hibernate. I just set the screen to be turned off after 10 min and the system to suspend after 30 min.
