I promised some test results. I haven't been able to test SoftMaker TextMaker in actual use, but I decided to put all the word processors I have access to to a simple test: smart quotes. These are all
the latest editions of the software, all free except WordPerfect. (Note that there are paid editions of SoftMaker, and they may work better.) Typeface was Times-Roman--standard in all. I input this sentence,
after enabling Smart Quotes if the capability was available:
"Hello, test," I said, after sawing the 4' board. I think I cut it 2" too short. It's too bad I can't glue it.
The open and close quotes around the first two words should be curly quotes. The "inch marks" after both board dimensions, should be straight up-and-down marks. The apostrophes in the last
sentence should be curly. Here's what I got:
OpenOffice: Curly around Hello test. Straight after 4. Curly after 2. Straight apostrophes.
LibreOffice: Curly around Hello test. Straight after 4. Curly after 2. Straight apostrophes.
Lotus Symphony: All curly.
TextMaker: All curly.
KingSoft (free) (No Linux edition; Windows 7): All straight. (There did not appear to be an option for smart quotes, or if there is, I couldn't find it.)
WordPerfect (No Linux edition, currently; Windows 7): All correct, as stated in the beginning.
This is not exhaustive; I didn't try quotes within quotes, where the opening and closing should be double curly, and the interior should be single curly. There are a few other less often seen things; I would
expect WordPerfect to get it right. Among the others, I will have to prefer Symphony or TextMaker as the least objectionable. In Windows, there is no question. When I have more comparisons to share,
I will do so. As the editor of a small circulation (~1000) newsletter, and a several-times published author in larger publications, I'm fussy about these things. When I have more to share, based on whole bodies
of text, which I will have, I will come back and report.
