Office software
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:12:38 PM »
Not a question, unless someone has tried this and can report, but on some list recently I found a reference to SoftMaker Office.  This is normally a pay-for program, but if you are
diligent, you will find that you can download free versions for Windows and Linux (BOTH!) that are supposed to be good to use forever, i.e., not trial software.  Since I don't remember
what list it was (it was a Linux list--I don't belong to a Windows one!) I am passing the information on here.  This software, which includes a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a
presentations routine, is supposed to be a real good clone of MS Office.  I wouldn't know, since the last time I had to use Word was around the year 2000 while I was still working.
I downloaded the RPM version for Linux, and it seems to have installed OK, altho there were some odd messages on unpacking.

Anyway, just passing on the information, for those who are less than satisfied with LO or OO--you can count me among 'em.

I just got it this evening. I will probably be using it in a few days, and then I will be happy to add my opinion. As I said, I can't compare it to MS Office, since I haven't seen MS in
over 10 years.  (I was not crazy about it--I like WordPerfect.)   It would be useful if someone familiar with Word were to try this out and report back here.

I notice that the Linux version is 2008--one version behind the pay version.  I think the Windows version is 2010, but the pay version for Windows is 2012, so that's one version
behind also.  Hopefully, no problem.

Although good in many ways SoftMaker Office keeps the best compatibility only for the pay version.

If you are looking for an alternative to LibreOffice consider IBM Lotus Symphony http://www-03.ibm.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.nsf/home   is free too and has better compatibility with MS Office files, just today found that LO altered the graphics and tables of my wife Doctoral Thesis and Symphony didn't (except for a table that was easy to fix) there is an RPM which works fine in PCLOS,

Remember that if you install software outside repositories your PCLOS install may become unstable and you're on your own, no support in forums.

and lotus supposedly will be merged back into openoffice, so it can be used in libreoffice theoretically  :D

I would be quite happy with Symphony except for a couple of glitches: after working on a file for a paragraph or two, the vertical bat disappears, and sometimes after another
paragraph or so, you can no longer scroll down in the file, and you have to save and reopen.  I haven't found anything else as yet--in spite of this, I'm happier with Symphony
than with either OO or LO, which look to me like identical twins.

Since Linux is open software, I frankly don't like to be told that I shouldn't use anything that's not in the VERY AGING repository.  I really hate the stranglehold that Windows
puts you in; let's not let any distro of Linux try to do likewise! (OTOH, if my only choice was the so-called most popular Linux distro, I'd be using Windows in a heartbeat!)

dougmack did you install the patch?  if not, probably that will fix some of the problems, except the disappearing cursor  ::)

"Since Linux is open software, I frankly don't like to be told that I shouldn't use anything that's not in the VERY AGING repository"

you know that this statement has only two possible answers

1. install it at your own risk and if you break it, you fix it, we can't help you

2. you know the second, you won't like it

Considering that a new LOManager is sent to the repo every time a new LibreOffice is released, how can you consider it as "VERY AGING?"
As for other packages, every one of our packagers has been working his butt off to upgrade packages. >:( Do not insult their efforts. >:(

There was no intent to insult anyone.  However, when I say "very aging" I refer to the number of programs I see that have dependencies later--sometimes several versions later--
than what's in our repositories.  OpenOffice was one such program, altho it seems to work anyway. But I wound up not using either LO or OO.

The dependencies discussion is completely irrelevant for these two office suites because both, OO as well as LO are self-contained archives, the only thing they need from our repo is Java.

Yes, Java was the dependency that is out of date for OO.

Java updates are needed mostly for security issues, depends not to versions from LO or OO!
