The fullmonty desktops disapear
« on: May 29, 2012, 03:06:31 AM »
I  downloaded the fullmonty ISO. USED K3B to write the DVD. Put the DVD in the drive and booted to it. It was that simple. I installed Fullmonty to my hard drive, or better said fullmonty installed itself to my hard drive after I answered some simple questions. A smooth and trouble free operation.  Then my hardship started. I have been running SUSE LINUX for years and years and before that RED HAT but this plasma desktop has me totally foxed.

On the no1 screen (internet) Ii want to replace the mail icon with an icon to start Kinternet which is a wonderfully mature stable program for making a dial up internet connection via a cellphone on a usb cable. I lost all the fullmonty screens and could not recover them so I had to reinstall FM completely. I have now reinstalled 3 times and I am desperate. HELP!!!!

I will reinstall a 4th time and then would beg you to tell me in simple terms HOW TO. achieve the following WITHOUT LOSING THE DESKTOPS. (please do not tell me to RTFM the documentation on the Plasma desktop put out by KDE is pathetic.)

1) Replace the MAIL icon on the internet screen with an icon and link to a dial up connection program. I got KPPP to work so if I cannot get Kinternet I could use that. I want the dial up in addition to my WLAN connection to the internet which is working fine.
2) Add an extra virtual desktop (no7) on which I will run KONTACT. Kontact is an excellent program which keeps all the things a working man needs in one place, namely email , diary, work-schedule,adress book, sticky notes, Journal, notebook, task manager. I want to set it up so that Kontact runs on screen 7 from boot up. Desktop 7 doesnot have to have anything else on it except perhaps an icon to start Kontact should I accidentally close Kontact.
3) I actually got contact to run by logging as root and changing the group of the "Kontact binary" to users , owner remaining as ROOT. After logging in to my normal user account again I set myself as part of the users group and was able to get Kontact to run. If it is running when I shut down of course it starts again at boot time but I think the set up is tacky. I need an icon that starts KONTACT. I got the word Kontact to appear on the main menu by the BIG K left of panel but clicking there does nothing.

I have had other problems but think they are best covered in BUG reports.

Hi,

thanks for your interest in FullMonty. It is a highly customized KDE desktop layout, and you can find and please read important information here and post-install tips here.

Please also read the file FullMonty_readme.txt located in your Home-folder. This file contains clear instructions how to add an application launcher into an existing container. Adding another virtual desktop (7) is not straightforward and will most likely destroy the FullMonty layout. FullMonty also includes tools to restore the desktop layout if it got corrupted (fm_setwidgets), or use fm_switcher to setup the normal KDE desktop layout for a new user on the system. Information and instructions for this are available in the links I provided before as well as in the FullMonty_readme.txt located in your Home-folder.

hope this helps,
-p.

To an ordinary stiff like me those instructions helped zero. and no amount of setwidgets helps if you lose even one desktop layout. I kept losing one or more while trying to add icons. Resolved it by re installing

Adding another virtual desktop (7) is not straightforward and will most likely destroy the FullMonty layout.

In fact I have added two more desktops and I am writing this because those many users who were unhappy with the change to Plasma desk top can have similar facilities to the KDE 3.6 desktop by adding two more virtual desktops.

RClick on the pager on the panel on any Fullmonty desktop, Lclick pager settings, Lclick Virtual desktops and increase the number of desktops to 8. Rclick OK at bottom of window.

Now select your no7 desktop on the pager. Rclick on the screen which is blank and scroll down to Folder veiw settings and Lclick. At center top of screen  click to unlock widgets and then change LAYOUT to folder view and click apply at bottom of the screen. As soon as you do that a blue folder icon labeled "Location" will appear in the left panel of the screen.  Lclick that gives a screen where you can select to specify a folder. I moved all the stuff out of the desktop folder into a new folder I created called OLD leaving only the waste bin and a folder called documents behind. Back to Folder veiw settings download some new images select one and apply it for wallpaper on your new desktop and now you have two desktops that work just the same way as the KDE 3  ones did. As I want to use Kontact  I had to Fidel to get contact but now I have Kontact running  desktop 8 permanently . I can scatter my current work folders all over desktop 7 just as in the old days. The new version of Kontact has some nice extra facilities. I am now going to make a new ISO of the installation before I load all my data files. Any one who wants it only needs to ask.
