Hello,

I have a dual boot machine.
1.- Booting from Win 7 HD is fine, internet connection works fine even with demanding online games, my son was playing fine during all the weekend.

2.- But when I boot from the Host PCLinuxOS LXDE in a SSD, this is having a lot of problems to connect to the internet, I have an intermittent and slow connection. It fails when trying to upgrade the OS, it is issuing internet connection error messages.

How can I  troubleshoot the internet connection, and to solve this problem?. Any tutorial or indication is very much appreciated, I connect via ADSL and wired LAN.

Thanks a lot.

Supply hardware specifications ......  particularly the NIC ......  and copy and paste the error messages .......  and also state what you have done (if anything) and the results of that, to try to get a better connection.

3.- Error in my last update, copied from synaptic:
"W: Failed to fetch http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/x11-driver-input-wacom-0.14.0-1pclos2012.i586.rpm

3.1 Very often the browser shows this error:
"Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.webpage.com.
Check the address for typing errors such as
    ww.example.com instead of
    www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Please note:
a.- When I was in the USA I had a wireless connection via a Netgear USB adapter, at that time internet worked fine, but I had little time to test and no RJ-45 LAN was available. I returned to my country since a week, I do not connect the Netgear wireless USB now that I use RJ45 LAN.
b.- I am a little confused because with Linux I have 3 boot options after I installed the kernel to detect more than 4GB of RAM:
Boot PCLinuxOS 2012
Boot PCLinuxOS 2012 (Safe mode)
Boot Microsoft Windows
Linux with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs
Linux with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs

If I "Boot PCLinuxOS 2012" it do not work with the internet connection
If I "Linux with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs" it randomly works with the internet connection
At boot it ask: 1 wireless, 2 default connection, I hit 2 or 1 same problem.

c.- If I check the SSD with the Intel SSD Tools via Windows 7, the SSD is 100% fine with 100% life.

Hope this information helps.
Thanks

Please copy and paste the following command into a terminal and press enter.
Then copy and paste the command and the result into your next post ...

lspci | grep -i eth

Also ...  open PCC - Hardware - Browse Hardware ........  and highlight the ethernet entry on the left and on the right side, down at the bottom, please report what    Module:   ?     is listed

I would suggest that in PCC - Network & Internet   you Remove all connections listed, and then 'Set up a new network interface' for the wired (rj45) NIC.

Then test your connection again.

Do this with NO wireless device plugged in.

Thanks a lot Just18,

1.- This is the result of the command:
$ lspci | grep -i eth
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 06)

2.- This is reported by PCC, Detected Hardaware under "Ethernetcard"
2.1 RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller

2.2 On the right side under "Information" pane:

Identification
Vendor: ‎Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Description: ‎RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller
Media class: ‎Ethernet controller

Connection
Bus: ‎PCI Express

Vendor ID: ‎0x10ec
Device ID: ‎0x8168
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x1043
Sub device ID: ‎0x8432

Misc
Module: ‎r8169

3.- In PCC - Network & Internet  - Remove a connection, I removed both:
wifi(wlan0) and
eth0 Realtek Semiconductor Co....

4.- Then in 'Set up a new network interface' I created a new one wired:
eth0 Realtek Semiconductor Co....
Automatic IP (BOOTP/DHCP)
Get DNS servers from DHCP
Start the connection at boot
and started de connection

5.- It is very late here, I will test tomorrow all day, I am posting from the same Linux Host with the new connection.

Thanks and best regards

Hello Just18,

1.- Now that I deleted all connections and created only one wired, is even worst, after every page viewed, it stop.
I monitor the connection and when it get disconnected, I connect it again and it allows me another web page, but takes a lot of time.

Any Idea?, Is there an incompatibility among my hardware and PCLinuxOS? Because booting from Win 7 works fine, no delays, no recurrent disconnections.

2.- One and half month ago with my laptop that has a similar configuration but not dual boot, LXDE as host  and the 3 VMs worked fine, then I purchased my new Desktop and installed LXDE from scratch with the dual boot and this problem.

By the way the boot screen still ask for 1 wireless or 2 default, I enter 2 in the last option "Linux with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs".

3.- I got this message from the repos:
"Could not download all repository indexes
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences."

Thanks a lot for your time.

I don't understand this.

Can you explain in more detail where this question arises?
What boot screen? .....  at what stage in the boot process? ....  etc

I have no recollection of ever seeing it here .....

I think you should post the contents of the file

/boot/grub/menu.lst

You will need to be root to copy and paste the contents to your next post.

I have never had such a question show here, so there must be something causing it ......  do you recollect making any special provision in your boot file that causes this?

The standard installation did everything for me even automatically modified the Grub menu when I installed the new kernel from Synaptic, and also included the Win 7 boot option, here is the file:
Code: [Select]

I think I should have only One Linux Boot option plus the Safe mode and the Win 7 boot option, no more, but this is not the case.

The reason the third boot option does not show is this .....

Quote
title linux-nonfb

If you change that to this

Quote
title linux_nonfb

You will see the entry. It is a bug connected with the use of the " - " in the title.

I am noticing nothing out of the ordinary   :(

I am stumped ......  maybe someone else reading can comment.

Why would there be a pop-up question asking about ethernet or wireless when booting from that last boot entry?

BTW ......  does the question pop up immediately after making your selection or does the booting go a long way before you get the question?

EDIT for spelling

1.- Linux freeze several times today, so I had to reset the Desktop, this is the first time in all these years of testing Linux that I see Linux unstable, and I install the minimum configuration in the Host and anything additional is only from Synaptic.

2.- I booted from "Linux with kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs" and after it booted and the progress bar was about 3% booting, it asked "1 wireless or 2 default". And the question is asked the same by any of the Linux boot options, and I deleted the wireless from the OS, I do not understand why is asking again for wireless.

3.- The worst part is that with no network I would have to copy 120GB of VMs via USB to an external drive, and try installing Linux again, but I am not going to instal LXDE. LXDE formatted the SSD drive and installed itself in about 9 or 10 minutes, I do not know if this time was fine, may be it got corrupted by the "Speed Demon" (Intel SSD).

4.- Questions:

4.1 Is 32 bits Linux OS appropriated for these new 64 bits machines with so many new hardware?

4.2 Should I install a 32 bits Linux on this machine or it would be better to use a 64 bits Linux?

There are a couple of items that need some clarification.

You say you are dual booting Win 7 & PCLOS LXDE.

BUT ....  you also refer to a 'Host' ....  which implies you are using a virtual machine set up and not dual boot.

Can you clarify please .....  and if using a VM is that what is throwing the NIC question during boot up?

***

If you edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to delete the two boot options in blue below, that will get rid of the graphic during boot, and allow you to see at what point in the boot process you get asked the question.

Quote
title linux
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=fa578f0b-3dcb-4a31-b32d-0425898b2114 quiet nokmsboot vmalloc=256M acpi=on resume=UUID=5d1d223b-d7f0-4fe3-b7b1-b99ddbf950c4 splash=silent vga=788
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img

Post back with the last few lines of what can be seen on screen when it stops to ask the question.
That information might help sort what is wrong.

***

4.1    Yes, there is no reason not to use 32 bit OS

4.2    I would suggest 32 bit is fine unless you have need for some application which runs much better on a 64 bit OS. We will all no doubt run 64 bit OSs in the future on hardware that is capable. For the present there is little advantage.

***

3.  You say you have 120GBs of VMs which appear to be stored within the OS. I keep my VMs on a separate partition so that any changes I may make to the OS do not affect them.
You might consider keeping the VMs on a separate Data partition.

Hi JJ and J18,

Just to interrupt it may be the driver. I started reading and saw "Realtek" and choked. If I see that on an item it goes back on the shelf.

This may be the problem:

Module: ‎r8169

May need to be r8168

From searching:

http://www.rvdavid.net/how-to-get-gigabit-speeds-from-rtl81118168b-pci-express-gigabit-ethernet-controller-on-ubuntu-linux/
http://superuser.com/questions/396071/the-rtl8111-8168b-nic-under-linux-and-the-r8168-driver
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-networking-3/rtl8111-8168b-pci-express-gigabit-ethernet-problems-ubuntu-797088/

If its a driver thing over to J18 for the fix
