I'm unable to do exactly as you suggested, since there isn't any option for new mail notification in Application & System Notifications. Your test won't help me, since the new mail notification doesn't work using that method to begin with.

I am unsure from your reply if you tried what I suggested or not.

Well, it does play a .wav from there.... But how does this help me with my problem?

It means there is no point looking to system wide settings ......  a considerable narrowing of the possibilities.

In that case I would suggest backing up data from T/bird, uninstall it completely, and ensure all relevant files get deleted, reinstall it and bring back in the data.

Well, it didn't work. It now seems that because I created the folder myself, TB no longer has permission to "open" the file as of version 12.0. I don't know why. I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing works. I copied the .wav file to the downloads folder in my home directory, & it even works there. So, it's my folder. I've allowed read & write access, but it still doesn't work. Perhaps TB has now "locked itself out" in some way? If anyone can figure a way to make this work, I'd greatly appreciate it!

It's my personal folder that I keep all my files in(music, pics, etc). The file in question is simply a .wav clip that I use as my Thunderbird notification sound. It has read & write permissions, so I don't know why TB won't play it from that folder.

What folder name and what file name? What are the permissions on this folder and file? Be specific.

Neither do I. Nor do I know what the name of the folder and file you are referring to is. I'm outta here. Good luck.

Forgive me, I don't see how knowing the name of the folder & file could help in resolving this. I created the folder myself, & the .wav file doesn't come with PCLOS. I could name them anything I wanted, but that won't make TB play the .wav file. The folder/filename is irrelevant in this situation.
