Well now "Force Version" does come up where I can select the 290.10 version....but then doesn't let me "Apply" it.

I don't know if this will be a help, but Texstar has instructions here for pinning a certain version. I have used it & of course it works.  ;)
I don't know if this is a manual way of performing the same function as forcing a version via synaptic, but anyway the boss knows.  ;D
