The TP - Link W896ON was recommended on another forum - techguy support I think, or maybe geekzone.co.nz, so I googled for reviews.  While some were negative most were very positive, especially for the price.  Certainly they're priced competitively in NZ.

Set up was easy, but I had to use the ADSL cable which came with the device as the connection dropped off with my old cable.  My only criticism so far is the length of this cable, as it's very short.  I've had to move the modem/router don from the top of my desk.

Set up was easy, as it comes with a CDROM which uses a flash presentation to guide you through the set up.  I have to confess I set it up on a windows desktop PC which I use for Photoshop/camera etc.  It can of course be set up via a browser window, and I wouldn't imagine any problems so long as you have your ISP settings.  You can always phone the ISP to talk you through the settings in any case.

The laptop with Pclos saw the modem/router immediately and connected beautifully.  I'm just updating via synaptic, then when that's done I'll take the laptop around the house to check connectivity.  It's definitely a faster connection, as was advertised, being 300Mbps.

I'll post here later regarding reception throughout the house.  One of the reviews I read reckoned the signal could be detected from a good distance down the street, but yet to test that.

I should add that I installed the latest KDE download, so it's not Minime any more, but imagine that results would be the same, as it was the router not the PC.

yes, sometimes is simple to use the install disc

i bought a dlink dir600 router, it had the disc, i didn't used it

yesterday i bought a dlink pci adapter that has same speed and was meant to be used with that router, since the machine is xp only i used the disc, it asked me to press the button on the router, i forgot what use it had, when i pressed it, the disc configured the network for me, detect network, settings and entered the password  ;D  sometimes those discs are nice, not really necessary but nice

about the cable, sometimes the modem comes with a ethernet patch cable 568A and it seems your router wanted a 568B, you can make a longer cable if you need it, just copy the order of cables on the one you are usng now and get more utp cat 6 and one of these

easy to do

Thanks - I'll take a look at that when I go into town later.

Interesting - it was D Link Dir 600 that the wireless failed - it was a freebie supplied by ISP to a friend.  As she already had a wireless set up she gave it to me.  Consequently I didn't mind having to buy a new one :-)

I've just taken the laptop for a short walk, down the back of the property behind the shed, and out to the driveway, and remained connected with no drop off of signal.  Once i'm dressed I might take a stroll down the road and see how far I can go before it drops off - the neighbours will think I'm mad :-)

the dir600, what firmware did you used to update?  there is a recent firmware that maybe wans't installed on the router and could make it work well again, also this model can run dd-wrt between other custom versions

the new tplink, what security did you used?  wpa psk?  wpa2? since you mention a very strong signal better to have something that neighbors can't break easily

The firware for the dir600 was up to date.

I used wpa psk with a key generated by the router.  Should be secure.

when i tried to update by using web site and the update tool on the dlink, it said that it was updated but forum member found and shared a link to a newer firmware, i currently have firmware 2.05 but in dlink site you find 2.01 only

i can't find the original link to the firmware update i used and currently working on my router, i found this other link from dlink forum

ftp://ftp.dlink.cz/dir/dir-600/driver_software/

one of those should work, there is two versions of that dir600, not sure which one you have, you can download all of them and select one by one, the router will accept one of them

Thanks - I've got the new going and very happy with the increased speed, so will stick with it, and offer the router back to the person who gave it to me.
