samsung nc10 and xfce Phoenix
« on: May 22, 2012, 05:10:30 PM »
I just picked up this nc10, stripped windows, added 1gb memory (now it has 2gb ram), removed hd and installed a 30gig flash drive then installed pclinuxos xfce. I also installed a new battery, wow. now this netbook runs just like downtown.

okay here are all the questions...

1. how do I know if the camera is working?
2. how can i stop the battery from dying so soon?
3. how do i get all those keys to work as they should? You know which ones, they have "blue" writing on them.

Thanx for all your responses....

the camera can work with skype if it i working

also there is many apps on synaptic that can let you test if the camera is recognized and works correctly, kamoso is one and there is a couple others

about the battery, how many cell does it has, 3, 6, 9, 12?

3 should give you at best 3 hours, 6 around 5, 9 will give you around 8 and 12 will offer around 10 to 11

on konsole please run the command acpitool -B i think you could need to install acpitools form synaptic, don't remember if it comes on the livecd

post the results to know if your battery has lost some of the original capacity, my battery has lost almost 20% since september 2010

the blue keys, the function keys, none work?  then you need to verify if those work in switch mode or by holding them, in windows how do they work, by holding the FN and the blue key you want?  or does it work by pressing FN and then releasing it to press the function desired?

here's my apictool report....

[root@localhost george]# acpitool -B
  Battery #1     : present
    Remaining capacity : 4400 mAh, 100.0%
    Design capacity    : 4400 mAh
Last full capacity : 4400 mAh
    Present rate       : 0 mA
    Charging state     : charged
    Battery type       : rechargeable
    Model number       : 1 mAh

I don't know how many batteries are in it, I just replaced what was there.  Actually I know nothing about netbooks or laptops.

I hate windows so I simply removed it not knowing what the 'FN' or the 'blue' emblems do, all I know now is when I press the 'FN' key and say the F5 key that has what looks like a sun with half of it dark, strange things happen, hum, in this case nothing, but when I press say F10, hum, nothing again. Okay lets try F3...hum, looks like the only ones that work is the Esc which puts the computer to sleep, F9 which bumps me off the internet, and F11 which controls the numbers lock on the keyboard.

Thanks for the program 'Kamoso' My camera is working, but Kamoso is broken.

Thank you for your help.

the battery size is a good indicator, inside a battery module you will find batteries like this one

you can use that size to determine how much batteries it has inside

based on those results it seems that you were connected to the ac adapter but from the value i see there, 4400 mAh i would say that you have a 6 battery module

this is my result with a 3 battery module

    Remaining capacity : 559 mAh, 30.38%, 00:39:50
    Design capacity    : 2250 mAh
Last full capacity : 1840 mAh, 81.78% of design capacity
    Capacity loss      : 18.22%
    Present rate       : 842 mA
    Charging state     : discharging
    Battery type       : rechargeable
    Model number       : 3780 mAh
    Serial number      : PA3731U-1BRS

so, how many time do you get form that module?  it should be around 5 hours more or less

geeze...I'm estimating 3 hours or less. Must be only three batteries then.

well, let a full charge on the laptop and open konsole, write again the acpitool -B command and unplug the netbook, let it work normally , verify the command again and see how much time it gives you before it reaches 10%

that will give you a more exact number on how much the battery lasts

i was verifying the model and supposedly it should have a 6 cell battery for a estimated time of 7 hours but maybe you could have a 3 cell module, i can find 6 batteries modules for my toshiba netbook but mine came with only 3

as i mentioned before if you compare the size of one 2AA battery to your battery module and you see that there is no more space to fit 3 batteries, then everything is ok

you can find bigger battery modules for your netbook to gain more time but the cost is, well, it is not cheap, at least for mine, 75 dollars, yours could be the same, bigger modules should be more expensive
