Hello.
I have now an AOC 23" Flat Panel monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a video card GEForce GTX 570. The Host works with 1920x1080.

I installed the monitor driver in my guest Windows 7 Virtual Machine. Windows 7 recognizes the AOC monitor, but in Control Panel-Screen-Screen resolution, the maximum resolution available is 1278x1024, the resolution I need is not shown (1920x1080).

In same screen, under Advanced configuration, I have in Adapter: VirtualBox Graphics Adapter.

Does someone knows how can I get the 1920x1080 resolution?  With 1278x1024 it do not look good.

Best regards
joejac

what driver did you installed?

the virtual machine does not have access to your hardware directly, only to the virtual hardware the virtual machine offers

the only driver you can install is virtualbox guest additions

are you working in full screen or in windowed mode?

You first need to install the Guest Additions inside the Windows 7 host.

Then, go to View->Auto-resize guest display, and make sure it is both checked off, and not greyed out.

From there, Virtualbox does not use a hard resolution reset like you are used to.  All you need to do is resize the guest window, and that will resize the guest OS resolution.

Hello and thanks to all.

1.- I always install Guest Additions, I have 4.1.14 installed in the Win 7 VM.
2.- I installed the AOC monitor driver directly form the driver CD inside the Win 7 VM, and after that I installed VirtualBox Guest Additions in the VM.
3.- I have View->Auto-resize guest display, and both checked off, and not greyed out.

No matter if I use resize the guest windows or use the seamless mode, I am always limited to 1278x1024 in the control panel of the Win 7 guest VM, it do not shows bigger resolutions.

Any other ideas please?
Thanks a lot

Could try setting the resolution inside Windows 7 itself.

It's not going to show larger/other resolutions.  You actually have to resize the window on the screen.  It will then conform to the window you have drawn.

Hello,
Testing a little more on this problem, in the LXDE Host although I have in PCC - Configure Video Card a resolution of 1920x1080, but in LXDE Control Center - Display Settings I see it has selected 1280x1024, if I want to change it manually 1280x1024 is the maximum, there is not available the option to select 1920x1080.

How can I correct this? Because if the Host do not work at 1920x1080 neither the guests.

Any idea?
Thanks a lot

  • Keep it clean.
Inside the VM, do not use the driver for the physical monitor.  Use a "Generic LCD 1920x1080" (or, whatever the Windows equivalent is).
After that, set the resolution to what you want.

Other replies are right...with the VBoxAdditions installed in the guest, one of the features it provides is dynamic screen resizing...as you change the window, it will automatically change Window's screen resolution to match (again, do not install any physical monitor drivers).

Running if full screen (Right-CTRL-F, I think) with the Additions installed should take the display to 1920x1080 (as long as the host, PCLOS, is running that resolution).

Hello T6, the driver was selected by PCLOS installation.
My card is an NVIDIA GEForce GTX 570HD
In Synaptic of the Host, I see installed a lot of nvidia stuff
In PCC - Hardware - Configure Video Card - Graphics card - Custom - Choose an X server  is selected "vesa" I do not know if this is fine.

Hello pags, although in the Host PCC the resolution is 1920x1080, in LXDE Control Center - System - Monitor Settings - Resolution is 1280x1024 and it do not allow a greater resolution, this might be the problem but, how can I tell the Host to use  1920x1080?   ???

This is the contents of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the Host

Why are you using the vesa driver instead of the nvidia driver appropriate to that card?

Hello Old-Polack,
I let the installer to work, I do not touch what is automatically set up by the PCLOS Installation disk. Now, which of the 7 nvidia drivers available in PCC is the appropriated for my card: NVIDIA GEForce GTX 570HD?

I found a driver for Linux in this page, but I was told not to install anything that is not in Synaptic.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-295.53-driver.html

I appreciate your advice.
Thanks a lot.

In Synaptic you need to have dkms-nvidia-current installed, as it would be the one you want. In PCC --> Hardware --> Configure Video Card --> Graphic Card it will be listed as NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360. By default, dkms-nvidia-current should already be installed, along with its dependencies. Check in Synaptic to be sure, then you just need to configure the graphics card in PCC.

Thanks a lot Old-Polack!, very clear instructions.
What a joy and what a difference, Now the Host, the Win 7 VM and the Linux VM looks very nice. Now I have to solve the issue with the Linux VM that do not allow seamless mode, but that has to be a Guest additions problem.
You saved my day   ;D
