[SOLVED] samba : NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS
« on: May 21, 2012, 12:38:56 AM »
I have had issues in one form or another for close to  2 years with Samba, it doesn't help that  I'm still a Noob and confused

today's problem is (actually much the same every time I reboot)
Shared folders (on PCLinuxOs) do not display in Dolphin but can be seen from my WinXP machine and from the XP machine I can transfer files to and from linux box
So when i cant see shares I start Smb4K and there is no sign of workgroup

then  in a terminal I "su" and type in
Code: [Select]
[root@localhost laurie]# su -c "smbtree -d 2 -N"
rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384)
added interface eth1 ip=fe80::fad1:11ff:fe05:82a2%eth1 bcast=fe80::ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff%eth1 netmask=ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff::
added interface eth1 ip=192.168.0.163 bcast=192.168.0.255 netmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.0.163 ( 192.168.0.163 )
[root@localhost laurie]# ^C

I go back into Smb4K and the workgroup is visible but when I click on it I get
Quote
The list of servers could not be retrieved.
Read the error message under "Details" to find out more.
Could not connect to server OFFICE
Connection failed: NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS.

usually after dozens of tries the share are eventually displayed and all is good till the next
boot
 but not this time  ???

any help appreciated

I have opened a terminal and typed in
Code: [Select]
findsmb
and got this
Quote
IP ADDR         NETBIOS NAME   WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION
---------------------------------------------------------------------
127.255.255.255         OFFICE        *[        METRO         ]
[root@localhost laurie]#

I don't understand where 127.255.255.255 comes from when localhost is 127.0.0.1
and neither IP's are in smb.conf. are there other config files used by samba?

thanks in advance

metro

PS found 127.255.255.255 is IP for Virtualbox running XP

Have spent several hours following this over and over
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=93375.0

I get the following message when I try to display samba shares in Dolphin
Quote
Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall.

what I find strange is in PCC I select Network Sharing then I select "Access Windows (SMB) shared drives and directories"
when I click on the "search for servers" button my pcliuxos (office) computer appears in the list, however normaly you would expect to
see a list of shares too.

Should i be able to see other computers on the network?

jumping under a passing bus seems like a good solution at the moment
PLEASE SOMEBODY SAVE ME  ;D

Can somebody advise whether removing all references to samba in synaptic and re-installing is wise
or can I render my install U.S.

thanks

how many computers are on your network?
what operating systems do they run?

whats the output of these two commands

smbtree -N -d3

smbtest

ps:
you must press "enter" for the last command to complete

Jambo  muungwana

It does not help to solve this, because upon starting my PC this morning I can browse the network and all seems well
from experience this may be fine for the day and not work again after the next re-boot

I have 2 computers on the network "DELL" running WinXP and "OFFICE" running PCLINUXOS(updated) and VirtualMachine PCLOS running XP
although the VirtualMachine was not running when I did the test below.

Code: [Select]
[laurie@localhost ~]$ smbtest

The problem could lie on it keep looking for a computer named "METRO", do you have any idea what this computer is ?

The problem could also be with a local master samba server on the LAN and the solution could be with starting up computer in your network in certain order.

clues could in your "/etc/samba/smb.conf".

can you post its content here?.put it in code tags

thanks muungwana
METRO is my workgroup

I have another issue going on at the moment with a program failing to start and I was reading my last post regarding that problem when I noticed one of your replies and though I would use that advice here
I have used "cat /var/log/syslog" , the output was several pages so I have just pasted the last few lines, however the full output seems to be a constant repeat of whats below

smb.conf=
Code: [Select]
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

any reason why you have the above options? try to change them to below, restart samba and rerun smbtree -N -d3 and post your result

security = user
local master = no

Muungwana I changed these all to yes
Quote
local master = yes
domain master = yes
preferred master = yes
because when they were set to "no" I would get this message in Dolphin when trying to find Samba Shares
Quote
Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall.

I find it strange that security=ads was there I did not changed this, but have now put it to "user"
but question whether it should be "share"

try "security = user" first.
Thats what i have here, "share" complicates things since it needs additional configurations

You can only have master server on your domain, if you enable it, your "OFFICE" computer will fight with your "DELL" computer for it since your "DELL" computer is also configured to be a local master.

I do not think thing will fail to work if both are master, one will give control to the other if both are none, shares may not show up but will be assessable using IP address.

ok
I tried with security = user and all other settings ="no", I reboot both machines and still get "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall."
when searching in Dolphin.
Also because security is now = user I cannot reach linux shares from XP error states I do not have permission

I spent some time reversing what we have tried including security = share rebooted both machines and am back where I started with access to Linux from XP but no shares found in Dolphin
still get "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall."

Have now gone back to how you suggested muungwana all = no and security=user
just gotta love computers  ???
