If you kept the changes i suggested, then the local master browser is now on your windows computer and linux samba broadcast messages do not get a response. This suggests a firewall is up on your windows computer and its blocking your linux traffic.

Can you turn off windows firewall if you have one and try again to run smbtree?

Just noticed you posted before me, ignore my post below I will set system back to what you suggested and disable XP firewall

thanks muungwana
I'm assuming that there is only one place for firewall setting and thats in PCC
I choose Security and under "Setup your personal firewall" I note checkbox is already ticked to allow
everything ...no firewall.

does that apply to LAN

one thing I tried whilst waiting for your reply was to set only "preferred master to no and the others yes. With security  set to share
I get my workgroup appear i Dolphin , but when I click on it to view shares I get an "Authorization Dialog" request popup. None of my passwords work however

local master = no
domain master = no
preferred master = no
The option to change are above, i think you can keep the security one the way it was for now.The problem is i think with the master browser, keep those off to have only one master browser running on your windows computer.

The master browser is on windows, you are supposed to turn off firewall in windows. The firewall in windows is the one that blocks dolphin from working

you are welcome.

If you are happy with the result, can you change the title of the thread and add "solved" to it? its one of those rules around here.

It looks like its possible to turn off samba master browser on windows xp.

Instructions to do so are here: http://www.yellowpigs.net/mirrors/CMS/faq_by_subtopic/node140.html

you can turn it off on windows and turn it on in linux and things should work as expected.
