how to change the moniter frequency
« on: May 20, 2012, 03:35:08 PM »
ok, so i wanted to start over in a new post and ask a more specific question.  I want to know how i can change the horizontal and  vertical frequency range on my toshiba satallite m115-s1061 laptop. i did this to my desktop and it worked, however, i dont have the option to do that in my laptop, though i'm sure theres a round-about way to do it. also, i'm using the standard video card, but how can i update it?

Not enough information to go on. What is the "standard video card" brand and model? Did you set up the video card in PCLinuxOS Control Center? Looking at my xorg.conf, I see:

# File generated by XFdrake (rev 262502)

and

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "monitor1"
    VendorName "Plug'n Play"
    ModelName "DELL  M991"
    HorizSync 30-96
    VertRefresh 50-160

I did not enter the horizontal and vertical frequency ranges. They were generated automatically when I set up my nVidia card in the PCLinuxOS Control Center.

You don't ........  such frequencies are not applicable to non-crt monitors.

Install the correct driver for your graphics card using PCC - Hardware - Configure Video Card, and be sure to select the native resolution of the screen if it is not automatically selected (1280 x 800 I think but may depend on model).

9yes, those values can't be set by hand, even on a crt anymore, what you set is the refresh rate, from 50hz(really bad and old) to 120hz(very big and expensive high quality crt at specific resolution)

on lcd screens you can set it to work at 50, 60 and 75hz but honestly i never found any difference between those 3, everything looks the same, 60 is the default value

sometimes there is just 60 and 75 or just 60 so use 60hz and set it to the right resolution, the native one for that screen you have

i was searching and found that the maximum screen resolution for this game is 640x480

your machine seems to have a lcd and a lcd won't work well at that resolution, what you need to do is force the game to work in opengl and make wine to work in windowed mode

to set the game to work in opengl, that info can be found in winehq website

all the information about that as i said previously is in winehq

please read the replies on your post

this is the link

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=149

this is the info

Use the key "DirectDrawRenderer" and add that to your registry with the value "opengl"; you may also need to add the key "RenderTargetLockMode" with the value "readtex".

(Found under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D using regedit)

If the above trick does not work, or causes your Starcraft to crash on launch:

- Remove the DirectDrawRender registry entry.
  - Use your Wine Configuration utility to set Emulate Virtual Desktop to on, resolution 640 x 480.

on warcraft you can modify the game to force opengl by adding -opengl to the desktop icon created, could be useful to try that

Starcraft 1?  stopped from working?  is ranked as Platinum  http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=149
I used to play it with my kids using WINE, not anymore but it functioned without problems.

Wings of Liberty  has some problems but should work  http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=20882
