Is Kdenlive up to this task? [Task complete]
« on: May 19, 2012, 11:28:54 PM »
A friend has asked me to put onto Youtube the memorial service of her sister. There are maybe 20 tracks I need to extract from about a dozen video files to produce 4 individual files. For two of the files I'll need to overlay an audio track.

Is Kdenlive stable and feature rich enough to do this task? I've never used the app and can buy a Windows program if it isn't.

Not sure if kdenlive can do that(perhaps it can, but I've not used it that much), but it sounds like avidemux can do that.

There are several very capable video editors in the repository.

Which will best suit you and your requirements, only you can tell I guess.

I would suggest looking at  ffdiaporama, lives, kdenlive, avidemux, pitivi etc

I ended up coughing up $50 for CyberLink's PowerDirector. It did everything I wanted and didn't crash on me. A rare Windows win. Video editing is still a M$ win area I think.

Wow, i've done a lot of editing with kdenlive and never had a problem with stability. I've always found it to be a very capable editor.

I'm using the KDE 64 bit test edition as my main machine ( I know, my bad). Kdenlive wouldn't even start successfully. I'm working on a project these days where my billing rate is $80/hr so the economics didn't compute on trying further. Also when your encodes can take a couple of hours a crash in the middle of the night really sucks..

Don't you think the fact that you are running an unsupported test OS might have had a bearing on the answers you received?

I know the rules around here well enough. Asking what software might be up to the task didn't seem to violate the spirit of the forum rules.

I don't regret using the 64 bit version day in and day out. It's been pretty darn solid for me. Based on the reviews of read around the web video editing software is probably the last hold outs for Windows. I just wanted to know what the possibilities were and what experiences people had had trying to do similar work. I would have asked exactly the same question had I been using the 32 bit version.

Indeed ...  but if given the choice between the 64 bit test environment and a stable Win environment, for the job you described, some of the answers would likely have been different.  ;)

That is what was meant by my last post ... I was not referring to rules ...

A while back I would have thought the same thing, but for a year now I've been using Kdenlive to edit video mostly for family and friends. I've found it to be very stable feature rich and easy to use.  I'm about to start shooting a fund raising video for a local non-profit group and I plan to use to Kdenlive to post it.  I have all the confidence in the world I won't be let down.

For the time being, we are not to discuss about KDE 64-bit and other apps that are on testing/test no matter how stable our assessment of these are. The only section these things can be thoroughly discussed is at the Testing section of our forum.

Thank you for your understanding.

I'm surprised that kino has not had a mention. It's simple but it works! The only trouble is that the default output settings produce mpegs that are silent in a DVD player and I find myself using devede to then convert the mpegs to ones that work properly, and bombono which helps you create decent menus etc.
PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.

Lightworks Is Almost Ready For Linux Release

Lightworks, the high-end non-linear video editor that was open-sourced, is almost ready to finally debut on Linux.

The Lightworks open-source announcement was covered in 2010 and was expected for a Linux debut in late 2011, then came November 2011 release plans, but the Linux version was ultimately delayed.

Half-way into 2012, we finally see the existence of the native Linux client for Lightworks and there's video of it running atop another distro.
