[SOLVED] USB 24 in 1 card reader not recognised
« on: May 18, 2012, 11:32:17 AM »
Hi,

I have a Silvercrest 24 in 1 card reader (plugs into USB) which I have been using quite alot in another OS but my full-monty wont recognize it at all.  I have done some searches but nothing is jumping out at me.  Any suggestions please??

card reader:  Silvercrest model 12013sc.  (yes I know they are cheap enough to buy another but how do I know that wont work either?)
PClinuxOS Full monty 2011.09, Kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs, KDE  4.6.5

Many thanks for any advice.

Al.

a long time ago it was recommended to turn on the pc with the card reader connected, can you try that?

also open konsole and write lsusb with the device connected, post the results

OK,

I did the 'lsusb' before and after plugging in the reader, it was seen by this command!!  the output of lsusb just plugging is is here:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0bc2:3300 Seagate RSS LLC
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 152d:2329 JMicron Technology Corp. / JMicron USA Technology Corp. JM20329 SATA Bridge
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp. Flash Card Reader/Writer
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0840 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Express

For info, I have 2 usb drives, (Seagate and SATA bridge) also a web cam.  The reader is Alcor Micro corp......

I did a power down and reboot with it connected and the output was the same, just a different order. (with and without the SD card plugged in)

In another OS, the reader shows up as 4 different drives.

One thing I should possibly mention is that the SD card is brand new, not used so whether it is unformatted im not sure....(ready for my raspberry)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Al.

No, They are for storage only of media.  My OS is installed on an internal IDE drive.  This is just a standard setup, PCLOS on ide drive, 2 usb storage drives on usb for music/videos.

Do you think it may be worth removing all usb devices and then trying the reader?

Hi,
Tried removing all usb devices then plugging the reader in after a reboot......same result....lsusb sees it but nothing in dolphin to mount and no notification in the task bar......If you say that there were posts on this topic a while back, I will do some more searching on here...
(I think this is going to be a long haul)

Just to clarify something ....  you said the card reader is plugged in and recognised but nothing to mount in Dolphin etc ............  did you have a card inserted into the reader to be mounted?

The reader does not get mounted ...  the file system on the inserted card gets mounted .....

Hi guys, sorry for the delay in writing back....been busy with that dreadful day.....you know, the big 'Four Oh!', lol.

Anyway, yes, the SD card is in the reader, I have tested the card on families computer with XP and it reads and writes fine.  I will do more searches this evening and see what I come up with in this forum....could it be that its just the card reader isnt compatible with linux at all??
In case you dont know... Silvercrest make is the 'own brand' make for a german low budget supermarket here in UK....

Thanks for helping,

Al.

OK, guys.....I think I may be suffering from either a hardware issue or something to do with the card being bigger than 4Gb.

I read an old post dated 2010 that Linux isnt fussy about SD cards bigger than the 4Gb for some reason.....so, digging through my box of old stuff, I found an old 32Mb card....pushed it into the card read and hey presto....notification came up, I mounted it and found some old pics I forgot I had, lol.

So, I think either its this 4Gb linux thingy or my reader doesnt like my 8Gb card....any suggestions??(the reader is about 3 yrs old)

I'll leave this thread open for a day, to see what you guys think and maybe mark it solved from there.

I recall one forum member having some difficulties with a card and a new reader fixed the problem ...  I don't recall what the problem was ..  card size or card speed that was incompatible through the reader.

I am familiar with the Silvercrest brand ....  generally of good quality for the lower end of market price ...  and have not had any complaint about any of the devices purchased from them.

I also have a few Medion devices ....  from Aldi ....  all work well.

:D :D  .....  if there was a 3 year warranty on that you might be able to return it  :D  :D
