Latest Nvidia driver 295.49 -- weird problem
« on: May 15, 2012, 06:35:53 PM »
Hi all.

Not sure whether to post this to hardware or software so here goes....

I have a Dell 1720 Inspiron laptop that has a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card. Everything has been fine until yesterday when I updated the system and the Nvidia driver got updated to version 295.49. Now for some strange reason everything is fine until I try to power down the laptop. Everything shuts down fine, the discs stop spinning but the power light remains on and sometimes the cooling fan keeps going. Weird huh? The only way to kill the power completely is to hold the power button down for a few seconds or remove the battery. I know it's the Nvidia driver that's causing the problem because I've now switched to the NV driver (nouveau driver is too buggy to use) and it now shuts down fine. If I switch back to the Nvidia driver the problem returns.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Rich..

Highlight the dkms-nvidia-current driver in Synaptic ......  then Package - Force Version .......  and select the previous driver from the list (290.10) and use that.

Thanks, tried that but it won't let me force the installation of the older driver, I get an error telling me I have broken packages. However, when I check for broken packages there are none.

In the meantime I've been playing around with the Nouveau driver. It's a little buggy when using the desktop effects, often areas of the screen will go blank or corrupted, but turning off composite extensions has solved that problem. I have been surprised just how much more responsive the desktop has become by disabling all the effects so I may just live without them. As a test I fired up BZFlag and the graphics acceleration is excellent. So I think I'll wait for a new driver from Nvidia and hope that fixes the problem, or just stick with the Nouveau driver :)

As an aside to this, I also had a problem with the updated Flash Player, the colours were sort of reversed. I read that by turning off hardware acceleration in the flash player settings solved that problem, however I didn't bother to try that, but using the Nouveau driver has solved that problem too. Even with hardware acceleration enabled in Flash, the colours are all fine. :)
