I *think* your problem may have something to do with soundwrapper .........  check the running processes to ensure soundwrapper is running.

Seems here soundwrapper dies when Thunderbird is launched.

The command for launching Thunderbird is

soundwrapper thunderbird

I don't use sound notifications from T/bird, so am not sure about this ......   just an idea .....

You could be onto something.... this is what konsole says:

X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request:  13
Current serial number in output stream:  13

I don't see soundwrapper running, but all other sounds work(music, videos, etc). Does that mean anything as to the cause?

Can anyone help?

The only way I can help you is by answering your questions , like:
Can you see if " this " is so and so on your computer
Can you see if " that" is so and so on your computer

Maybe you can find a difference and come to a conclusion//solution that way.
Sorry, it's the best I can do right now.

OK, I tried activating the sound on T/bird.

First thing to note is that it had Custom enabled, so I tried using the Default sound system ......  which did not work.

I went back to selecting a sound to be played ......  the one there by default would not work -- I suspect it did not exist.

So I navigated to

/usr/share/sounds

and selected the first wav file I came across.
Clicking Play after selecting it, played the file.

On further investigation, there are lots of files that will not play ......  so I suppose some specific format is required.

I now have my email sound set to   rock.wav  :D ;D

Hope that helps.

I got it working! All I had to do was copy the file I want to use to that directory.... No idea why it wouldn't work from my personal folder like it did before. Permissions, maybe? Thankyou so much for that tip!!! "Silence is deafening".... indeed :P
