Dual boot m/c windows Xp/PCLinuxos - Cyclic redundancy check

I wanted to put this question more to satisfy my own curiosity than anything else. As mentioned in the subject my setup is with a dual boot consisting of Windows XP and PClinuxos. On the Windows machine I was trying to copy some data from a DVD. Most of it copied ok but there were some files that threw up an error of 'cyclic redundancy check' for the DVD.
Ok, so I thought lets repeat the same copy using PCLinuxOS. This worked fine with no errors (I copied the files into the available Windows XP disk). When I switched to the Windows machine all the files were there and readable.

So, I was just wondering why the PCLinuxOs was quite happy and copied all the files from the DVD ok. While, he Windows XP would throw up the 'Cyclic redundancy check' error message I presume it is because Linux process's the data in some sort of different way?

Anyway, the issue is resolved. Just interested to know if anyone might be able to offer an explanation?

Driver?  Errant memort (RAM) issue?  HDD errors (caching/swap/pagefile)?

Good question.  I haven't seen a CRC error since accessing a floppy in DOS (v5 or so).

At least you were able to get your data.

the drive can be old and that could be a symptom of drive failure
