OS : LXDE.....

...two clients have told me this so far....They cannot view video - just a BLACK BOX shows...eg; You Tube...etc...

I'm on a clients machine right now, who's trying to see this: http://ohmsweetohmdotme.wordpress.com/2012/04/29/doyle-drive-demolition-video/

All I see is a black box, also....

here are the terminal readouts of the version:

[xxxx@localhost ~]$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version:   lsb-3.1-ia32:lsb-3.1-noarch:core-3.0-ia32:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.2-ia32:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-ia32:core-4.0-noarch:cxx-3.2-ia32:cxx-3.2-noarch:graphics-3.2-ia32:graphics-3.2-noarch:lsb-3.0-ia32:lsb-3.0-noarch:lsb-3.2-ia32:lsb-3.2-noarch:lsb-4.0-ia32:lsb-4.0-noarch
Distributor ID:   PCLinuxOS
Description:   PCLinuxOS
Release:   2012
Codename:   PCLinuxOS

[xxxx@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Oct 21 22:42:28 CDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

[xxxx@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs

...It worked for him a few weeks ago...and i don't know exactly what to tell him.

He uses FIREFOX solely...and it might have to do with that?  Its FF#12.  and I went thru disabling the various player addons -to no avail.

Anybody else experience this recently?

Thanks.

JN.

.Yes, AS.....I already looked at it in Synaptic first, and it shows version : 11.2.202.235.1

I read the other link you supplied (thanks!)

In the link, it refers to an older version : that site that is closed. So HERE is another download site ...

http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el6/en/i386/rpmforge/RPMS/   {11.1.102.63-0.1.march 2012}

I will try an older version to download, and am pretty sure it is the problem.

I am very surprised that others hav'nt had this issue.

I will post here with results...and will 'PIN' the older version if it works.(for now)

I also loaded 'MIDORI', and 'ARORA' browsers to test- but they CRASH!....for some reason. ???
I think its FLASH related also in LXDE.

Here is a site to help others with no video viewing:  http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Video%20or%20audio%20does%20not%20play

and :   http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes]http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes] http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes

-- mucho important info around those sites also... ;)

......still 'sperimenting'...

Yes, it this the older version that "works", although you need to take in account some security risk ...
Not sure to understand "that site that is closed" .. can't download the rpm ?

...it said "this file does not exist and is not available MINUS"  but realized there was a "clikable link" above...  :-[

I'd rather try that one designed for PCLOS anyway....thanks. and DO realize the risk.

will post results ...

........ok.........its downloaded to the clients DOWNLOADS folder...

I read this off the link:

It's is the previous flash-player-plugin.

Howto:

Download the  Flash-player-plugin.
Remove the actual flash-player-plugin with  synaptic.
Start konsole  and su to root.
Go to the folder where it's downloaded.???

Type rpm -Uvh flash-player-plugin-11.1.102.62-1pclos2012.i586.rpm

Test it!!

JohnW

....Heres what i get:

[xxxx@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost xxxx]# rpm -Uvh flash-player-plugin-11.1.102.62-1pclos2012.i586.rpm
error: open of flash-player-plugin-11.1.102.62-1pclos2012.i586.rpm failed: No such file or directory
[root@localhost xxxx]#

I think i'm missing something.....I extracted it in downloads...etc...?

EDIT:  I just checked in pcc : browse and configure hardware >videocard.... and a window popped up saying "Your Xorg configuration file is broken, we will ignore it."   ...................

Who's "we"...and maybe its a Nvidia driver snafu....?   Theres an old Nvidea video card installed : Description: ‎NV15GL [Quadro2 Pro]

...The client says he did'nt touch anything...etc...

Maybe I'm looking to a "re-install"...... :( :'(

...i have lxde2011.09, and 2012.01 CD's with me....and goin to 'speriment' some more...

.............tried the LXDE 2011.09 live cd...and it has flash plugin# 10.3.183.10-1  which works fine.

I tried the LXDE 2012.01 live cd ..which has flash v. 11.1.102.55-1  and that works fine with various videos also...

This leads me to believe it WAS an update of some kind - probably re to the Flash plugin...in the past few months, and if not many are reporting this issue, it may be due to the type of video card or configuration they have with their machine.

---i'll have to deal{investigate} with this more with a few other clients {and their machines} before i do re-installs...

I will post my conclusions here.

Thanks for help, AS. ;)

JNibski,

I'm using Firefox12 on a fully updated LXDE and I can view the video you're pointing to just fine. Have you tried updating to one of the most recent kernels? That one's pretty old.
Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

..............Hi dj -   I'm so glad you caught that.....i had a hunch , but did not have my LXDE laptop with me to compare....i did'nt realize it had'nt been automatically updated when he supposedly was keeping up via the UPDATE NOTIFIER.   I have my laptop  to compare now, and it has :
kernel- 2.638.8 -pclos 1.bfs. 1-1pclos2011  and everything works fine...SO -i will try to update his kernel via synaptic -manually....and will report here in a few days, due to the clients location.

Guess you where in the roots directory,  you have to change it to /home/username/Downloads  (default in Firefox).

...........Thanks JW.   I think it said basically the same there also...I went to the root to double check.
Tomorrow i have an appointment there, and will have all my testing paraphernalia.
I will take my time, and go thru his machine with a fine tooth comb.
I will report my findings here.
Thank you for your input. :)

search for rpm-installer in synaptic, this will install your rpm, too via right click menu...
Note: only try for our rpms... ;D

Thanks, Leiche!   The 'RPM' installer did the trick, and was not an "installed' package on the clients machine...I'll have to scrutinize other peoples LXDE installs for that package also!  The client can see the video now...must be something up with the recent FLASH update...I found this scenario with 2 other machines.

I will mark this as solved.

Apparently some people with certain graphic cards have issues when using the latest version of flash-player. For those of you concerned I have repacked the older version flash-player-plugin-11.1.102.63 which should be available soon in Synaptic with the name flash-player-plugin11.1. Due to the potential security risks you should only install this outdated version if the uptodate version (currently 11.2.202.235.1) does not work for you. The outdated and the current version are mutually exclusive, meaning you can only install one of the two, preferably the current version of course. Once this appears in the repo install the version you need and please do not pin packages.
