how to configure ethernet card for LAN ONLY
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:50:33 AM »
I connect to the internet with USB dongle. I wanted to share this connection with another computer via cat5/ethwernet but get a message stating that I have no connection configured for LAN.

If I use the network centre at all for the ethernet card, it tries to use the ethernet card to connect to the internet which I am not trying to do at all.

How can I configure the ethernet card for LAN connection only?

Thanks in advance

ubd or usb?

maybe a usb device like a usb 3/4G modem?

there is routers dedicated to do just that, connect the device to the router and from the router offer the connection on the ethernet ports or wireless to other devices

on some modems what you can do is share the connection from the usb 3/4G modem to the ehthernet adapter so other machines can use it but last time i tried that, one machine had internet and the other lost access and wen i could make the other work the first one lost conection  :-\

not all the modems will let you do this, this is why i mention the router, can't find the model atm

Put in a static IP address in the same subnet as your other computers.  For example, fi your network is 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 assign a static IP of 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254.  Then assign the subnet mask (almost always 255.255.255.0).

However, do not assign a default gateway.  This will prevent any type of IP routing from taking place, restricting access outside your LAN.
