VMware Player
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:25:38 AM »
I am running the 64-bit test04 version of PCLinuxOS.

Unfortunately I need certain Windows programs and for one of those the hypervisor has to be  VMware.

Right now it will compile under kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3 but not under kernel 3.2.16-pclos1.bfs despite the appropriate devel and source files being installed. It doesn't bother me but inhibits testing under the later kernel.

I cannot speculate as to the reason for the problem. I found the log file quite confusing, particularly as its first line stated that it was VMware Workstation version=8.0.3 build-703057 that was being installed!

Hi Alan,

as with VMware Fusion, VMware Workstation 8 and Player 4 only support kernels up to 3.0. Any later kernel requires patching of the VMware modules. You may check out this which might help further. Or just keep 2.6.38 and wait for VMware to update their installers, it's about time... ::)

Pinoc, it could be awhile.  The player has been in almost disrepair for a couple of years now, as VMWare focuses on where the money is (ESX & VCenter).  This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is what it is.

short update,
the VMWareTools included in the latest release of VMware Fusion 4.1.3 (and most likely also in the new Workstation 8.0.4) now compile properly on PCLinuxOS with kernels 3.2.18.  ;)
