Recent issues with USB
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:13:41 AM »
I upgraded my system through Synaptic and I don't know when or how, but my USB hub and front ports are not working any more. I installed usbview from synaptic and it shows the hub but nothing comes up when I plug in a flash drive or a hard drive. I installed a different kernel just to see if that would help. It didn't. I'm using 2.6.38-pclos3.pae. When I use the 4-port card in the back of the desktop, USB drives show up. The hub is connected to that card. Needless to say, I'm very confused.

I'm betting that something in the bootup procedure is logging an error but I'm not sure where to look. Also, is there some way to force the mount?

Thanks.

You say you have 4 working ports and one of them has the hub plugged in? Looking at the list above, I see 6 devices, a Belkin 7 port hub, a laserjet printer, a SATA link, mouse, keyboard and a webcam. So, is the hub not working when plugged into the front ports? Is it the SATA link that's not working?

Kinda hard to pinpoint when all your hardware is being enumerated. Can you be more specific?

Have you looked at your Synaptic installation logs? You can find them in the /root/.synaptic directory. You need root privileges to view them. You can also read the logs by starting Synaptic, then click on File > History.

The 4 ports are in a 2.0 card that I installed. I have a 3.0 card installed too. That may be the SATALink?? The 7 port hub is plugged into the 2.0 card and when I plug a flash drive into it, the flash drive led flashes but nothing comes up. The rest of it is correct.

What am I looking for in the logs?

The 7 port hub is plugged into the 2.0 card and when I plug a flash drive into it, the flash drive led flashes but nothing comes up.

Okay, you plug in a flash drive and get no on-screen notification. Let's see if it's being mounted. Open a terminal, with nothing plugged into the 7 port hub. Enter: ls /media. Then, plug in the flash drive. Again, enter: ls /media. Also enter dmesg | tail -50 | grep USB.

What am I looking for in the logs?

Anything USB related. Only thing I see so far is usbutils, which supplies lsusb and usb-devices commands. Sorry, I missed the part where you said UsbView doesn't show anything plugged into the hub. Have you tried the hub on any of the 3.0 ports? Were you able to automount the flash drive by plugging into the hub before?

disk above is a USB drive but it is in fstab as a permanent mount. truecrypt1 is apparently a container for my truecrypt mounting when it happens. I have not tried the hub on the 3.0 ports. Yes, the device notifier would popup and let me mount the drive.

flash drive into the original ports works as normal
flash drive into the add-in card works as normal
hub is not working but has power and flash drive and normal portable usb hard drive both have led indicators saying they are connected to the hub

have not tried with everything else unplugged yet

flash drive into the add-in card works as normal

If the above two are working then there appears to be nothing at all wrong with the operating system or the PC hardware or the add-in card.

So the problem is the hub!

You should test the hub when connected to one of the original PC USB ports.
If it still fails then it is not reliable IMO.

I would tend to agree but the webcam is plugged into it and it is both seen and functional. Curious.... it seems that the two top ports on the hub are not functioning but the five on the rear do.....

Hi,

Do you have a backup you can restore ?    You said the problem
started after a current update was completed.

You've probably already rebooted.

Have you unplugged everything and run "hald" in root terminal ?
Then plugged everything back in and tested ?   Automount should occur
then.

Sometimes the port doesn't have enough power to support
so many added usb's.   My machine doesn't have enough power
for that.

Just some ideas for troubleshooting.
