Synaptic appearence distorted..
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:57:32 PM »
Hi

If I start synaptic from a terminal I get this:

Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()  ???

And a lot of the synaptic appearence is filled with weird signs  :o

Besides from this synaptic  seems to work ok i.e. installing and upgrading and removing packages.

I tried to uninstall synaptic and reinstalling with apt-get but still the distorted appearence.

Here is the look:

I can remember of an event that I booted my laptop from battery, and batter failed during boot...

When starting up again, most things seemed OK (after running fsck)...
=> but Synaptic, and I think also some things in PCLinuxOS Control Center had unreadable text items
I don't think it's related with my case, because in my occasion, the package names etc were unreadable... (and I did a reinstall after "trying" some things out)

Reloading (Genindlaes?  8) ;) :P) the package lists also doesn't solve the problem?

Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()  ???

If the error message is correct, it is saying that a "string" is not correctly encoded as UTF-8, this let me thing at an invalid string included in the translation extent of the package, most likely will affect only one language.

Which language is exactly, so we can try to replicate the problem ?

Yes danish.
But why just this malfunction in synaptic and not in other programs  ??? I have a bad feeling that I have done something wrong somewhere  :'(  But I do not remember where  ??? When installation was newer everything was ok.

Just tried the Danish translation on my test system ... can replicate!

OleWilly,

try to run again addlocale on your system, possibly from a terminal console, eventually you can grab some error message ...

I have to admit that don't understand the problem ... as I think the "komponent/section" should not be translated at all ... from my test effectively they appear in English ...

Hi

Synaptic seems to work ok in spite of the distortion. The worst thing is that the explanation part of the packages is only signs and letters that alter from the previous boot up. This last time the description was nothing but capital letter NNNNN  ???

Look at the pango packages what's installed in synaptic.
Maybe could  be the issue there?
Remove it or/and reinstall it.

Just a suggestion.  :-\

Try this ... after reinstalling your correct locale, reinstall Synaptic again and any other app that may have this "distortion".

Guess I am stuck. I wonder how such a failure can be introduced. I remember that when the distro was newly installed synaptic was all ok.

My suggestion is for now a fresh install in a another partition and update it.
Do a fully update and run addlocale again.
Add  your used apps again via synaptic and check when it goes wrong when you have a broken synaptic again.

Have other GTK applications the same issue as with synaptic ?
