[Solved] Bug Report in E17: Language Module
« on: May 06, 2012, 10:15:58 PM »
Hi guys,
I would like to report a bug in the E17 desktop. When I load the module "Language", all my key bindings are gone. After that, even when I assign new actions to keys, and then apply and close the keybinding window, the does not work. When I open the key binding window again I see that the default key bindings are restored. Does anybody have the same issue?

I've never tried to use that module, but it's reportedly been buggy for some time. Which languages do you want to use? Have you installed the corresponding locales- package for each language, as well as the setxkbmap package in Synaptic? Have you used addlocale to add the extra language(s) you want to use?

OK, here is my problem. I want to add the Arabic keyboard layout to my keyboard layouts. I don't want the menu text or anything else to change. Just the keyboard layout so that I can type in Arabic. I installed the locale-ar and setxkbmap (was installed in fact). To be clear about the problem, what happens is that, when I load the language module, the keyboard bindings are reset to default. That is the main problem now.

Thanks for your help.

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Keyboard-toggle
GenericName=
Comment=Toggle between 2 layouts with Alt-Shift
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us,ar
Icon=/usr/share/icons/gnome/48x48/devices/keyboard.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GTK;GNOME;Application;Utility;System;Monitor;X-MandrivaLinux-CrossDesktop
StartupNotify=false

Copy the text above and paste it into a text editor. Save the file as ~/.local/share/applications/Keyboard-toggle.desktop. That is, save the file as Keyboard-toggle.desktop to /home/yourusername/.local/share/applications directory. The .local folder is hidden, so you will need to show hidden files in your file browser. The entry will be shown in More Applications > Monitoring section of the menu for your user only. If you want system wide access, (access for all users on the system), copy the desktop file as user root to the /usr/share/applications directory.

On the e17 desktop, go to Settings > Settings Panel. Click the Apps icon at the top and then the Startup Applications entry. Scroll down to the Keyboard-toggle entry. Select it by clicking on it, click Add, then click Apply. Close all windows. Log out and log back in. Open a text editor and try it out. To toggle between keyboard languages, use the Alt-Shift key combination.

Make a copy of the Keyboard-toggle.desktop file somewhere for safekeeping.

You're welcome. Glad to help. Please edit the title of your first post in the thread and include the word Solved somewhere. I know our e17 packages are a little "behind the times". I'm working towards helping out with that.

And that's great news, I returned to E17 and I'm very happy with it.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.
