guest additions - synaptic or iso download (solved)
« on: May 04, 2012, 02:48:01 PM »
ok im getting my vbox program set up here in cowboy and indian country for a little more wow ;) now that i have the compiz effects running smoothly. the last time i was setting up vbox machines was in 2010 :P and at that time you had to download the vbox guest additions iso and install it that way. :) now i see a package in the repo that is named vbox guest additions. ??? i did install that per synaptic but when i click on the install guest additions it says there is no iso found. :-\ where exactly does synaptic have the iso stored at or if the install is different through the package manager how do i go about this? it appeared from a search that maybe i have to install it in the shell. i will start the iso download from the web anyway just to have a copy for future use in case the net goes down for whatever reasons. 8)

If the virtual machine is running pclos, you can install the guest additions inside it from its Synaptic. However, the version is quite old as it comes from the vbox package which hasn't been built here for a while, and it only contains the most important parts, not every driver the ISO contains. For those two reasons, it's probably better to use the ISO.

If your virtual machine runs anything other than pclos (Windows, FreeBSD, another distribution of Linux...) then you need to use the ISO.

Loudog, use the ISO.  If it does not run automatically, then run the command VBoxLinuxAdditions.run from the command line, which will install them.  Run this as root inside the guest of course.

yes thank you both as i used the iso for the version from the repo and all is working fine but for the win 98 and the win me machines i had to go here http://bearwindows.boot-land.net/vbe9x.htm to get a third party driver for the graphics controller, install it the old fasioned win way but let me tell ya the driver made one h#%l of a difference in the graphic drawing speed. the slowness in the 98 and me is caused by the graphics driver. with the new one i can get 1600 x 900 resolution in them now and they are fairly snappy considering their so old anyway. a big windows fanatic came by as i has win 98, xp, and win7 on a different desktop, enabled the cube rotate in the skydome with the windows hover enabled (also had win xp stretched around a corner for more bling) and he could not believe what he was seeing. i said "all things are possible my son if you only but believe in open source and most especially pclinuxos." it made my day, week month, thank you my friends. GOT PCLINUXOS?
