When I try to install Clamav from synaptic I get the following message:

Extra output was generated during Package Manager operation
While preparing for installation:

libclamav-devel-0.97.4-1pclos2012
clamav-db-0.97.4-1pclos2012

What does it mean? And is this why I cannot run clamtk?

if i remember correctly it is not a error, it just informs that the service you just installed requires a certain service to be up and running with certain permissions

if the app you installed is working there is no problem

if not you need to restart the machine so the service starts when required with the right permissions

Do you mean you can't update virus definitions? See if this helps.

I haven't found it to be necessary to follow all the steps in Djohnston's article.

For me just ediing  /etc/freshclam.conf (as root) and commenting (ie putting a # in front of) the word Example is all that was needed to get it updating.

Or is your problem that Clamtk won't even open?

i don't remember which one is the service and which one is the graphical app

did you installed both?

about antivirus, why do you need one?

spot a virus in linux is so easy, it is almost boring, all of them looks the same now, weird exe? probably a virus, weird ini?  a file calling a virus!  weird recycler folder?  probably containing multiple viruses  :D

When you've just come from windows running without a real-time av is scary - you need to do the odd scan for reassurance purposes.

Like Linus's security blanket.

I find it also helps if I suck my thumb while the scan runs.

So far it's kept me virus free ;D

@mary.ydm
You could try going back into synaptic and reinstalling clamtk?
