My PCLinux install will not boot (Solved)
« on: May 01, 2012, 08:18:11 AM »
Dear Group, i hope some kind soul can help me out on this.  I have attempted to install PCLinux on a spare PC.  Following advice i partitioned my 120gb master disk into 2 partitions and installed Win XP to 1 partition.

I then booted from the live CD and following the instructions i made a swap, root and home partition on the remaining disk space.
The install seemed to go fine, the machine restarted and left me at the familiar boot screen where i could choose either Linux or Windows.  I choose Linux and the machine rebooted.  It did this every time i attempted to start it.  Is there a way of righting this or should i try installing it again?

Thank you

After the initial PCLinuxOS install and you get the prompt to reboot (and "possibly" remove LiveCD) on that very first boot have you got to the stage of setting root password and user/account and password details etc...?

I've not tried Windows yet, I'll do that now.  No, I've not set any passwords yet.  I was prompted to restart the PC and remove the live CD, then i was taken to the start screen with the options of booting to linux, safemode or windows then it restarts when i select either linux or safe mode.

Right then Just18, Windows boots up fine.  Does that help you at all?

If memory serves I believe after restarting the PC (and as you mentioned removing the live CD) you shouldn't need to select anything as it should reboot directly to some config options (things like root password and user account/passwords  etc  etc....) and then onto the desktop login screen.

I believe you're right, only mine doesn't, it gives a post beep and around it goes again, and again and ag----

"Edit"  I just tried to install it again, this time i choose "Use existing partitions"  but the result is the same.  I'm now going to try a 2010 version.  If that works maybe it's my disk thats at fault?

"Edit"

How odd!  the 2010 disk installed a treat, no problems whatsoever so perhaps it is the disk at fault.  I'll grab up a new one and try that.

"Edit"

And thats what i did, and it worked fine.  So who knows?  Maybe a bad download or maybe a bad disk but it's working just fine now.

Thanks to those who offered me there kind advice
