FYI - OnBoard Graphics and Nvidia PCI Card
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:22:56 PM »
I have an older (2004) HP Compaq Presario SR1303 Desktop computer
that has on-board (integrated) VIA graphics.
In the BIOS there is NOT a good option to turn the on-board graphics OFF.

I purchased an Nvidia FX5200 PCI graphics card and found that it was a real
struggle to get it working with both PCLinux and Win XP.
It worked just fine with PCLinux but would not work with Win XP.

The solution after many tries was- in Win XP was to uninstall the Nvidia drivers
shut down the computer remove the Nvidia card - boot back in to Win XP and open the control
panel and go to System>Hardware>Device Manager>Display Adapters and double click on the
on-board graphics and select Do Not Use This Device.
Shut down the computer again and re-install the Nvidia card without the drivers being installed.
Boot up the computer - Enter the Bios and select use PCI for the graphics - save settings and exit.
Now when booting into Win XP it used the Nvidia Card but with very low resolution.
Now and only now was I able to install the Nvidia drivers and still use both PCLinux and WinXP.

Hope that will help someone, that may run into the same type of situation !

Wow... looks like that was quite the hassle.  Good info, man.  Thanks for passing it along.

yes, it is not a walk in the park when changing pci cards

mainboards and os are designed to be smart with agp and pci express, not with old pci

At least with PCI you had "Plug and Pray"...   I remember the fun of configuring a full card cage on an ISA buss NEC V20 powered machine running MS-DOS 3.31.  Can you say "jumper city" and "interrupt conflicts"?  Sure, I knew you could.  (We used the darn thing at work to read a set of strain gauges to weigh railroad cars...)
