Sudden change in aspect ratio

Hi All

When I started my Desktop System two days ago in started with a reduced Aspect Ratio!!

Nothing had changed since I last used the computer but now the opening screens are still in 16:9 but the Desktop comes up in 4:3.

I have looked everywhere I can think of to put this back to 16:9 but no luck. Where is this controlled? How can I get back to 16:9?

I have PCLinuxOS 2012-2 on an Intel machine with nVidia Chip Set and a 16:9 LCD monitor.

You can change display settings in the PCLinuxOS Control Center (grey circle with crossed tools in your task bar), in the tab Hardware 
Did you update via Synaptic two days ago, or...?

I have not updated or changed anything (Hardware or Software). I shut down the one night and the following morning I had a 4:3 image!!!???

I've looked where you say but there is nothing there to do with Aspect Ratio and anything I do changes does not effect the 4:3 image I have on my Desktop!!

Is there anything in

System Settings > Hardware > Display and Monitor > Size & Orientation

that you can alter ianw ?

If the settings for the graphics card are correct in PCC - Hardware, then in KDE you can also change the desktop display in through the KDE Control Centre - Display and monitor.

Ensure both settings are the same ......  and that they are both 16:9 in size or whatever the native resolution of your monitor is.

No - No luck at all. I'm still stuck. I have 16:9 when I start the computer but from the log-in screen onwards everything is in 4:3. I've stopped and started Xorg and compared the old and current xorg.conf files (no difference) and I've looked at all the settings under 'Configure'.

Nowhere can I find any setting that controls the Aspect Ratio. And anything I do try and change does not effect this ratio.

Have you checked adjustments on the monitor itself?

Auto config, or maybe manual adjust.

But I don't think that is what it is as the Intel and PCLinux Splash Screens all come up 16:9. But as soon as you get to the PCLinux Log-In Screen everything changes to 4:3 and stays that way!!!??

Post a pic of the settings for the Graphics in PCC - Hardware, and another for the settings in  KDE CC - Display

It might give us some clue ....

Ianw You won't find an entry for "aspect ratio" as such. You have to look at the resolution represented by numbers.

Go to PCC > Hardware > Configure Video Card. You should see something like this screen.



My monitor is not w/s and is therefore set to 1280 x 1024.

Can you tell us what is your setting.

OK - Sorry about the delay but have been busy with other problems 

I've discovered that I need to set the resolution in 'PCC' first (and if you scroll down to "others" you DO get Aspect Rations showing). I selected 1600x900 (16:9) but this made no difference. I then went and looked under 'Config Desktop' and found first that 'Primary Output' was set as "None" and the resolution was set at 1024x768. I changed this to VGA1 and matched the setting of 1600x900 and this worked perfectly!!

However despite me selecting this to be the Default every time I re-start the machine it goes back to 1024x768!! This tells me that the "set as default" is being overridden by some other setting somewhere. Does anyone know where this setting is and how I can change it to what I want. And for that matter what would cause this to change in the first place??

If your monitor really is a MECER TW222 its native resolution is 1680 x 1050 (with an aspect ratio of 1.6).

Try using that instead of 1600 x 900 in PCC, in KDE Systemsettings, and in xorg.conf (and if your display card has a program where you can change the settings, there too).
