Live CDs won't work
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:12:02 AM »
I installed PCLinuxOS last November (2011.09) with no problems.  I've just installed a new hard drive and want to install PCLOS on it.
When I insert the CD (the same one I used last time), I get the following message:
Initializing gfx code...
boot:

It waits for a few seconds then says:
gfx boot:

After a few seconds it goes back to the first message, and carries on this way.

I have tried two other PCLOS versions, which I have downloaded at various times, and also one from Linux Format, which came with their magazine in March last year.  They all produce the same result.

I have tried and succeeded with other distros (including CentOS 6.2, which I'm doing this on) and they all work.

Can anyone help me, please?  I love PCLinuxOS and want to continue using it.

Thank you.

Is that the only thing that has changed in the PC since the CDs last booted?

Is that HDD presently in use?

Personally I would be inclined to disconnect the HDD and try boot with the CD again.
If the CD booted, that would at least identify what is interfering with the booting.

Thank you for your reply.  The only change is the different hard drive.  I've checked the BIOS, and it's set to start with the DVD drive.  I will try your suggestion, but right now, it's bedtime.

Thanks again.

Back again.

I've tried without the hard drive in, but the result is the same.

I wonder why it's just PCLinuxOS that's not working.......

At the ( gfx ) promt try typing

LiveCD

If this doesn't work then

Check your BIOS ........  set the RAID/SATA controller to AHCI if not set.

You're a bloody genius, Just18. :)

I changed the BIOS setting, and already have a working, installed PCLinuxOS system.  Thank you.

I do feel a little intimidated, though.  My geeky son has given me a Squeeze Box Duet network music system and a Netgear ReadyNAS.  Now he's gone back to Aussie and left me to try to set it all up.

Methinks I'll be a regular user of the forums ;D

Thanks again.  I appreciate your help.

You're welcome on the forum.... there is already a lot of information available - but when there's no answer to your question, please fire it  :o :P ;D

Have a nice time using PCLinuxOS!

:D  Glad it worked out for you  ;)

If you search for  "Using SqueezeBox Duet with Netgear ReadyNAS"  on the net you will find a few tutes.
Read a few of them and be aware of their dates, so you get a good idea of what is required now.

The nearest I got is a Squeezebox Radio for the bedside ...... works very well for my use.

Also it is possible to have the squeezebox server running on PCLOS ....  I have done so to allow the radio play the media from my PC.

have fun!  :D

That is nice gear to have ......  I am jealous  :D
