I just set up the machine with xp pro  to rdesktop into with a pclinuxos box and see if it will work with its native 256MB memory.

If I can get it to run Pclinuxos headless, would it ease the video requirements?

This machine will only be used to stream, and never need a monitor once installed.

Ill try your suggestions when I get up.
UPDATE: Tried fbdev choices on livecd and either get a black movable mouse arrow on black screen, of it shows the xorg help screen.

Thanks.

there is no minimum requiremente for video

the problem is the video card itself

i suggested to add more ram or verify ram modules to doscard that as the problem

if the video card doesn't work with the kernel there won't be any difference if you have a monitor connected or not, the video card will still be working with or without the monitor

at the boot options (f6 on the livecd) use default and then add "3" without teh quotes.

This will take you to a text login - the gui will not start - log in as guest and type

lspci |grep -i vga

this will show us what the card is exactly

I get (without grep, just lspci):
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE chipset integrated graphics device (rev01)

nerdful1,

I would suggest browsing this page, it explains a lot about your card and its configuration.

your card would be classed as a 845G or 845GL.

for its initial set up I would suggest the following

Boot in to run level 3 again (kernel option - default - add a "3" w/o quotation marks)

log in as your a user or guest if a livecd

su to root

type XFdrake (note the case sensitvity)

choose intel

choose your monitors resolution

choose 15 or 16 bpp (not 24)

accept those choices

then type "xinit draklive-install" if all has worked this will load up the installer only

once installed use run-level 3 to set up your network connection (via drakconnect)

you will need to do a full update (via apt) and install an alternate window manger ( I would suggest icewm)

once installed restart the system and change the session to icewm.

Thanks, I'll  try your suggestions when I get home.

BTW, I just went through a similar thing on this laptop (dell pp10s) here. It booted perfectly to LXDE on my usb key with persistence.

After updating through synaptic, it came up with same xorg help screen and "no screens found" errors.

Rebooting in the non-persistant mode got me online.

In IRC chat sometime while lurking, someone came in and asked why he was getting no screens found error on his LXDE. I missed replying to him/her.

Seems updates are breaking video that worked with default iso.

Anyway, I'll study up on the workarounds.
Thanks
