[SOLVED] Panel disappears on boot up
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:00:15 PM »
Hi All,
The bottom panel on my KDE desktop does not appear on boot up.

I have recently made some changes to my desktop to accommodate my new monitor (to prevent burn-in).  The manufacturer of the tv recommends not leaving a static image on the screen for two or more hours.

I have set the panel to auto-hide and managed to get all of my desktop icons (very few of them to begin with) to fit on the panel.

Now when I boot up the panel simply does not appear and there are no icons on my desktop (since I removed them).

I have to tinker with right clicking the desktop and making some selection hoping that somehow the panel will reappear.

So far I have been lucky and the panel does eventually come back, but how do I prevent this problem from occurring (please don't tell me to set the panel to be always visible - I purposely changed it to auto-hide in order to prevent screen burn-in).

Any ideas?

As always I welcome and appreciate any help that you may give.

Do you have the Desktop Effects on? It's Under Menu>More Applications>Configurations>Configure Your Desktop>, in the Workspace Appearance and Behavior tab. If you do, try turning it off, this happens to me too, and it's the desktop effects.  ;)

Yup that seems to do the trick.
Now I wonder what happens if some time in the future I ever decide to enable desktop eye-candy?

My desktop effects are turned on also.   On those occasions when the panel is missing, I can move the cursor toward the top of the screen and a line will appear momentarily.  As the line disappears, the panel will appear at the bottom.  Sounds odd, but, I like the effects turned on.

Well I give it a try and let you know what happens.

I think it was a bug that was worked out in KDE 4.7, we'll have to wait till 4.8 is available.
