connect tv box via cat5/ethernet to stream TV
« on: April 21, 2012, 11:18:25 AM »
I have managed to do this without problems on other distros. I have set IP address/gateway/dns in the box (which is a linux base vu+ duo)

In "add network interface" I choose ethernet  and enter the Ipaddress, gateway etc to match those of the box. In other distros I can set the connection method to "shared , or shared with other computers, rather than DHCP. I am not given a similar option here.

Unfortunalely, network centre seems to assume I want to use this setup to connect to the internet, which is obviously not possible.

A side-effect of this is that it tries to use this new setup as a default internet connection and therefore, disconnects my ppp0 connection.

I therefore have to fiddle around with with the network connections, including unticking the ethernet box in the active connections, in order to get my internet connection back on ppp0.

Should I be trying to connect this box in a different way?
Is the network centre only for connection to the internet?

Have you tried the "Share the internet connection with other local machines"?

Would this do what you need?

Or the net_applet in the taskbar...
=> it is possible there to connect to two interfaces at the same time.... and I already have used an ethernet connection for just a local connection between two pc's (without any other hardware in between)....

did you set up the connection between them in "Network and Internet/add network interface" or somewhere else?

I tried that, and the same thing happened. It cut off my internet connection via ppp0. Ispent 20mins getting it back, and can only do so when I have unticked ethernet in the active connections

Can I first ask what software you are using to connect to your cable box, and what type of cable box you have?

I have a static IP address set up in the VU+ duo (BH mediatomb image)  box and normally just have to type this IP addess into firefox and the webserver from the box is loaded into firefox, from where I can stream a TV channel via VLC
